Description

Gortin Glen Forest Park can be found just outside the village of Gortin in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Set within the Sperrin Mountains, the park offers a mix of blue and red graded trails with over 14 km of singletrack, combining forest flow with open hillside riding. It’s one of the key destinations on the MountainBikeNI network and a solid all-round day out for riders looking for both scenery and challenge.

Blue Trail

The blue route runs for around 7.1 km and is designed for intermediate riders who are comfortable on natural surfaces, roots and small gradients. Starting from the main trailhead, it climbs gradually before linking a series of flowing descents and forest sections including “The Roller Coaster” and “Kelan’s Chase.” Expect berms, rhythm sections and fast corners that keep the tempo high without being overly technical.

  • Length: approx. 7.1 km (4.4 miles)
  • Grade: Blue – moderate
  • Key features: long flow sections, tight corners, forest singletrack
  • Best for: riders building fitness and confidence on off-road terrain

Red Trail

The red route at Gortin Glen extends for around 4.6 km and is a tougher loop aimed at experienced riders. It begins with a steady climb out of the lower car park towards the slopes of Mullaghcarn (542 m), offering wide views across the Sperrins before dropping into the fast, switchbacked descent of “The Mountain” and finishing with tight, rocky singletrack through the forest.

  • Length: approx. 4.6 km (2.9 miles)
  • Grade: Red – difficult
  • Key features: steep gradients, rock drops, technical corners
  • Best for: skilled riders with good control and fitness

Why Ride It

Gortin Glen combines scenic forest riding with purpose-built flow. The mix of blue and red options makes it suitable for groups of mixed ability, and the views from the upper sections are among the best in the region. Facilities at the trailhead include parking, café (seasonal), toilets and picnic areas, making it family-friendly and convenient for riders travelling from Omagh or beyond.

Location and Access

The trailhead and main car park sit within Gortin Glen Forest Park on Glenpark Road, Gortin, BT79 7SU. The park is around 15 minutes’ drive from Omagh via the Gortin Road. Parking is free and trail signage is clear from the main entrance. The site is shared with walkers and family visitors, so riders are encouraged to stay on way-marked routes and respect multi-use areas.
