Gortin Glen opens new mountain bike skills loop

Gortin Glen Forest Park in County Tyrone has a remodelled skills loop, with two blue flow trails and a red technical line, opened on 27 September.

The remodelled Mountain Bike Skills Loop at Gortin Glen Forest Park, north of Omagh in County Tyrone, is finished and open. The park, run by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, says the work also brought improvements to the forest park's mountain bike trails and new signage across the network.

According to the park, the skills area now has two short blue flow trails with rollers and bermed corners, and one red advanced technical trail with rock drops and tabletop jumps. New waymarkers send riders one way around the loop and back to the car park, and the loop also leads on to the red trails, signed as The Mountain and Sika's Run.

The skills loop was officially opened on Sunday 27 September with a cycle event. That day Cycling Ulster's Off-road Commission ran its first Gortin Skills Jam, coaching 37 under-12, under-14 and under-16 riders on the new blue and red loops in cornering, carrying speed, body position and jumping, before timed runs on both.

The loop adds a short skills area to the park's existing blue loop (around 7.1km) and red loop (around 4.6km). The park thanked council staff, volunteers and the contractor, and the investment that paid for the work, but has not said who built the loop, who funded it or what it cost.
