Fife Council has approved plans for a major expansion of the mountain bike trails at Lochore Meadows Country Park. Velosolutions UK is on site building the new trails, and opening is now targeted for the October school holidays.

The project will extend the existing trail network by 2.5km, adding more technical riding to complement the existing routes. The aim is to establish Lochore Meadows as Fife's first dedicated mountain bike trail centre, making it easier for riders of all abilities to develop their skills and progress through the grades.

Work was originally expected to start in April or May 2026, and councillors were told the trails would be finished by the end of July. The target is now the October school holidays.

Funding and scope

The £400,000 project has been funded through a combination of sources, with £200,000 from Nature Restoration Funding and £130,000 from Fife Council's capital budget. The scope covers earthworks, surfacing, drainage, signage and safety features.

Alongside the new trails, the project includes the planting of 5,600 trees as part of an extension to the ancient woodland at Harran Hill, combining the trail build with a significant environmental enhancement of the wider site.

Fife Council confirmed the proposal falls under permitted development rights, clearing the way for construction to begin.

Background

Lochore Meadows already offers a broad mountain biking setup across green, blue and red grades, with skills-focused riding, a pump track, a 4X track, and White Wood Bikepark set within woodland and parkland in central Fife. The existing 6km trail network opened in March 2017 at a cost of £129,000. The Meedies Bike Club is based here, and the site regularly hosts rounds of the Scottish XC MTB series. Update 23rd July

Velosolutions: We’ve now moved onto the red-graded descent at Lochore Meadows. With the climb nearing completion, one excavator has pushed ahead onto the descent to start cutting and shaping the trail 😮‍💨

We’re using a 13-tonne excavator fitted with a rotating hitch, allowing the operator to bench, shape and finish directly from the trail line. Less machine tracking, more time digging, and better control over the finished trail shapes 🤌🏻

Update 26th September

The Central Fife Times reports that the new trails are now expected to open by the October school holidays, later than the end-of-July finish councillors were originally given. The final part of the funding was agreed by councillors in February.

The paper also sets out how the £400,000 budget breaks down: £310,000 for construction, £37,000 for fencing, £15,000 for tree planting, and £38,000 for contingency and professional fees. Once the build is finished, the trails will be maintained by council staff, volunteers and partners.
