Cycle Trail Inspection Course, Monday 9th November, 9.30am to around 5.30pm. £220.

This one-day course provides training and practical assessments, and confirms competency to inspect cycle and MTB trails. It provides a qualification to current Forestry Commission / Natural Resources Wales standards for the inspection of cycle and MTB trails, and has been updated for 2026 with the latest thinking from Visitor Safety in the Countryside (VSC) on risk assessments for members of the public and frequency of inspections.

Prerequisite: if you have no trail building or mountain biking experience, Campbell Coaching advise doing one of their maintenance courses first, or having experience of riding mountain bikes off road. Get in touch for more info.

Key sections covered
• Understanding the why, the when and the how of cycle trail inspection
• An overview of cycle trail construction and remedial actions
• Developing a safe system of work for cycle trail inspections
• Demonstrating ridden and walked trail inspections
• Signing off maintenance work

You will be given a reference Trail Inspection Book, which also has health and safety information. Through the workbook and the practical sessions, the course covers: access law, liability and duty of care, statutory requirements, trail grading, frequency of inspection, Construction Design Management, risk assessment, emergency access and egress plan, lone working, working on live trails, personal protective equipment (specific for the task), report writing, inspection by bike and foot, trail elements (technical features, drainage, construction constraints), and faults and observations.

Campbell Coaching also helped develop and deliver the CTC (now Cycling UK) programme of trail inspection courses for the Forestry Commission in England and Wales. After the course there is an online test to complete, which you can sit down to with a cuppa and the course books.
