Woburn Bike Trails

Woburn Bike Trails sits within Aspley Heath, an 800-acre stretch of woodland on the Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire border, on the edge of Woburn Sands close to Milton Keynes. The Bedford Estates now runs access as Woburn Bike Park and Trails, and riding needs a paid permit, sold as a day or annual pass. The network covers two red-graded trails, the longer Longslade Trail (6.5 miles) and the shorter, steeper Danesborough Trail (2.5 miles), plus the short black Peacocks track and a handful of bridleways if you want to extend the ride. With everything graded red or harder, it's a venue for riders with solid off-road skills rather than beginners. The trails are close to Rushmere MTB, and next door is the separately run Woburn Bike Park, currently closed to visitors while it's rebuilt into a formal bike park with flow trails, dirt jumps and downhill lines.

The Trails

• The trails can be ridden all year round and drain well in winter, sitting on free-draining, sandy ground.
• Woburn Bike Trails is the volunteer trail-building group that looks after Longslade and Danesborough, working with The Bedford Estates and pro rider Matt Jones on the wider network. Permit income goes towards supporting the volunteers.
• Both main trails are graded red, broadly in line with Forestry England definitions: mostly singletrack over uneven ground, with roots, berms, steps and drops, and challenging sections both up and down. Marked technical options (stump jumps, rooty descents, timber drop-offs, rocky sections and step-downs) sit above the overall grade. Every feature is rollable, but not always avoidable.

The Longslade Trail - Red

• The longer loop at 6.5 miles (about 10.5km), taking around an hour and a half. It runs across the sandy side of the heath, where exposed roots, drop-offs and natural features shape a flowing route through the forest.
• The trail passes through the top of Longslade Lane car park, so you can start straight from the car.

Danesborough Trail - Red

• Shorter at 2.5 miles (about 4km), taking around 30 minutes, but steeper throughout. It runs alongside the golf course and around Danesborough hill fort, where longer climbs and faster descents mix sustained effort with moments of speed and air.
• As well as from the main loop, you can join it in the middle of the heath at the top of Church Road.

Peacocks - Black

• A short 460m black track with multiple lines, berms, drops and a rock garden descent. On the Woburn trail map, black means steep, technical terrain with large, unavoidable obstacles.

Gravel Riding

Aspley Heath's 800 acres also carry four public bridleways, shared with horse riders, giving a mellower option alongside the red trails or a way to extend a visit. They run on sandy hardpack through the woods and connect into the wider Milton Keynes Boundary Walk and the Greensand Ridge Walk, with a link south toward Rushmere Country Park. The estate also says the Bike Trails themselves suit gravel bikes, though they're graded red. There's no dedicated route map for the bridleways, so download a route or use GPS navigation before you set off.

Admission and Prices

You need a paid permit to ride the Bike Trails, sold as a day or annual pass and booked online through Woburn Bike Park and Trails. As part of booking, you agree to the Terms of Use, the Safety Rules and Rider Responsibility Code, and the Risk Acknowledgement.

Getting Here

The main car park is Longslade Lane car park, Aspley Heath, Milton Keynes MK17 9HZ, on Woburn Road just before Woburn Sands. It's free, stone-surfaced and has space for horse trailers. It's also unattended, so don't leave valuables in the car.

• From the M1: leave at junction 13 and take the A421, then follow the B5704 via Husborne Crawley towards Woburn and on to Woburn Road. The car park is on the right just before Woburn Sands.
• Alternative parking: Sandy Lane and Church Road car park, Woburn Sands MK17 8TR, close to where Danesborough can be joined at the top of Church Road, and the Woburn Road layby.
• By train: Woburn Sands railway station, on the Marston Vale line between Bedford and Bletchley, is a short walk from the woods.

Useful Trail Info

• Helmets: a helmet is mandatory on the Bike Trails.
• Under 16s: welcome, but a supervising adult (18 or over) must be on site.
• E-bikes: pedal bikes and pedal-assist e-MTBs (250W) only. Electric motorbikes such as SurRons are not allowed.
• Riding after dark: the trails are accessible 24 hours a day, but the estate doesn't recommend riding them in darkness.
• Closures: closed or diverted sections are signed on the trail. In bad weather, check the Woburn Bike Park and Trails homepage and socials before you travel.
