Excellent for mountain biking . Love riding here one of my favourite places . The guys in the hire shop go out of their way for you . one of the best trails I've done .
Whinlatter was the first place I tried mountain biking so it has to be a big yes for skills development as I go back a couple of times a year and it still tests me and leaves me grinning!
This is a great addition to the Borrowdale Bash natural route if you have legs left for it at the end of the day!

The mixture of red and blue trails make it ideal for experienced and novice bikers alike. This is the first place a tried mountain biking and the hire bike was good value for money and allowed me to tackle the trails with ease.
As my riding has progressed I love the challenge of the north and south face red loops - the climbs can be punishing at times but you are rewarded on the downs!
Rode both the north and south loops and some of the blue on a day trip to the lakes and was really impressed with the trails.
I had been advised that to avoid the high car parking charges to park at one of the free forestry commission carparks down the hill from the main trail head and pick up the blue trail to get to the start of the red trails and then at the end of the ride pick the blue up again to take me back to the car and this worked out great.
Both the north and south loops are basically one big climb followed by one descent with some really nice features added in.
Given its position close to Keswick it does get busy but I never really noticed that when out on the trails.
This is one of those trails where its worth taking a few pics as you go around as there is some awesome scenery to be seen.
The two separate loops adds a degree of variety and if short on time still allows you to blast out and do a loop, the south loop in particular is great fun
What could be improved?
Some of the trail particularly on the north loop are looking pretty worn
We rode the red graded Altura Trail in spring 2013. The changeable weather certainly made it a trail of two halves, giving fabulous views on the North trail and a good deluge and thick fog on the South. There is a great deal of climbing to be done here on both loops before the rewards of the descent come. Some of the drops down the mountain from the side of the trail are not for the faint hearted.
The trail was well maintained despite the terrible weather of the previous 15 months and seemed slightly shorter than the advertised 19km (we didn't miss out the climb to the summit of the Hospital Plantation). 75% of the route is single track with very little shared with the blue route or pedestrians.
Staff in the shop were friendly and knowledgeable. Yes prices in the café and for parking were expensive but that's the Lake District for you, though it is cheaper than Dalby. If the place looked a state you'd wonder what they were doing with the money but it isn't.
