Mountain Biking on a proper mountain
We rode the red graded Altura Trail in spring 2013. The changeable weather certainly made it a trail of two halves, giving fabulous views on the North trail and a good deluge and thick fog on the South. There is a great deal of climbing to be done here on both loops before the rewards of the descent come. Some of the drops down the mountain from the side of the trail are not for the faint hearted.
The trail was well maintained despite the terrible weather of the previous 15 months and seemed slightly shorter than the advertised 19km (we didn't miss out the climb to the summit of the Hospital Plantation). 75% of the route is single track with very little shared with the blue route or pedestrians.
Staff in the shop were friendly and knowledgeable. Yes prices in the café and for parking were expensive but that's the Lake District for you, though it is cheaper than Dalby. If the place looked a state you'd wonder what they were doing with the money but it isn't.
