Nearby is also a set of sister downhill trails in Stile Cop known as Stile Cop Downhill (just off Stile Cop road).

Follow the Dog (Red)

  • Follow the Dog at Cannock Chase is a red graded 6.8 miles (10.9km) intermediate mountain bike trail aimed at competent mountain bikers. This trail was designed and built by Chase Trails in 2005.
  • Highlights include 'Twist and Shout', 'High Voltage', 'Son of Chainslapper', and 'Snakes 'n' Adders'.
  • The trail consists of flowing singletrack, great views, climbs, fun descents, boardwalks, rollers, jumps, drop offs, berms, step ups, step downs and rock gardens.
  • There are a number of optional black sections on this trail. For example 'The Head Banger'is a short black-graded section. It is near the start of Let Loose, with two boardwalks, a rock qualifier, and technically challenging rock garden.

The Monkey Trail (Red with Black Options)

  • The Monkey Trail joins the Follow the Dog half way round. It's a red graded trail but this time it’s a more technically challenging and demanding trail than Follow the Dog. It is 7.4 miles long but put together with the Follow the Dog it is just over 14 miles (22.6km) long and includes bigger climbs, more technical descents and optional black graded lines.
  • The trail launched in 2010 is intended for the experienced and technically competent rider.  Some of the renowned sections to look out for are Monkey's Uncle, Upper and Lower Cliff, Rainbow Valley, Over the Rainbow, Deerskull, Pot of Gold and Roller Coaster.
  • In 2023 a new section between Deer Skull and The Original Monkey opened called 'Old Father Time'. The section has been chosen as a memorial to Martin one of the Chase Trails volunteers who passed away in 2020.
  • The terrain is loose stones, roots, mud, steep climbs, technical descents, flowing singletrack, large berms, step ups, step downs, rock gardens, boardwalks, rollers, jumps and drop offs.
  • There is also a 1km long descent on the Monkey Trail called the Five Ways Descent.
  • The black sections are optional but once on them include large and unavoidable rocks and rock gardens.

Fairoak Trail - Green

  • There is also a Green graded trail suitable for families and beginners called The Fairoak Trail which is 2.5 miles(4km) long. There is one gentle climb back to the Forest centre. Surface is mostly smooth.

Perry's Trail - Blue

  • Perry's Trail is a blue graded 2.7m (4.3km) route built in 2021. The surface is smooth with some loose stone and muddy areas. Expect flowing singletrack, gentle berms, rollers, gradual climbs and rollable rock gardens. The highlight is a fun, fast, flowing descent. There are also three optional red sections to push your skills.

Stile Cop Downhill

  • A number of red and black graded short downhill runs making good use of the 65-metre hill. All of the runs end in the same place at the bottom of the hill. There is no uplift service but it is only approximately 10 mins to push up. The site is free to ride. NB This is a nearby but different site (see the separate listing).

Groups and Clubs

The XC trails are managed in partnership with Forestry England by Chase Trails. Chase Trails also managed Stile Cop downhill until 2016 when the Racers Guild team took over.

Easy red

Good amount of parking and plenty of room to absorb the crowds.  Not too far off theM6 makes this a nice addition to my places to go. I think that this could become a fave place. I think na few rides round Follow the Dog would be great for building skills.

What do you like?

I'm transitioning from blues. As we were passing by thought I'd try the red Follow the Dog trail as the blues here look a bit tame, even by my standards I ride at Grizedale, guisburn  and Whinlatter usually so fitness wize the trails here are nice and easy. It was a bit if a wet day when I rode here and I found the ground much more slippery than I'm used to. Let some air out the tyre and it was fine. Plenty easy enough for a moderately fit bike rider with good graded climbing on switch backs and fun little bermy down hill.  Small steps and everything of a harder skill level is easy to avoid. Considering that it's very busy the trail was not too cut up.   There was also plenty of places too pull over and let faster riders pass. Skills wize it builds well from a blue.

None.

Love the place

My regular place to ride, great place to hone your skills.

What do you like?

Lots of technical features. Some nice flowing sections of trail. Very little fire road riding and well signed.

What could be improved?

I wish there was more trail! There are quite a few bike thefts from the car park so do not let your ride out of your sight.

If you haven't been you need too. If you need to get fit and have a limited time, hit the follow the dog trail. If you want a longer ride, more challenging and technicial, follow the monkey trail which will add another 6mile/1 hour to your ride. Also, be friendly, say hi and help those in need.

What do you like?

Great circuit to challenge your fitness ability. The follow the dog trail is great because its not overly technically as it has a variety of tracks styles, plenty of decents and climbs and enables you to challenge yourself and better improve your skills and fitness. Follow the dog takes around 50 mins on a fair ride, it has a few nice climbs to get the heart racing and plenty downhill, humps and burns you can take with a consistent speed while required a level of fitness to push you to the limits. There are plenty of rocks, pebbles and roots to encourage you to find the best route and keep you on edge, sometimes tactfully throughing you off balance. The parking is good, £1.50 for an hour if you can do it in a quick time. Toilets are clean and tidy. Nice shops and food. Its in a nice location for the midlands. I ride it every week without fail just for fitness mainly and I'm still not board of it. After some time its great to get some strava results.

What could be improved?

The track gets plenty of use and will be busy in peak times, but most people around are quick to move out the way should you be much faster. I find the dusk time is the best time to go to avoid traffic. Because of he high use, some sections, typically the burns tend to be pitted which means you have to risk running high up the burn to avoid the uncomfortable ride at risk to sliding over. Seems that some of the inexperienced riders will hit the back brakes to hard in sections which is create pits and foul corners. On the whole though, it doesnt take to much away from the ride.

top venue

has nice ice cream too...

What do you like?

I learned to ride a mountain bike here, so have a soft spot for it. But having ridden numerous other centres (including BPW, Gisburn etc) I still think it's great. The dog is a nice ride, but fairly tame, and the monkey steps it up a level with some great technical riding. Some of the black options are very tricky, and so cannock has something to test most riders. Chase trails put a huge amount of effort into maintaining and upgrading, and have done a great job. The recently updated lower cliff descent is fantastic, with huge swooshy berms. good cafe, ice cream and bike shop too. Oh, and a gruffalo if you like that sort of thing.

What could be improved?

No serious bad points. If I had to nit-pick, the terrain seems to have a fair amount of loose gravel compared to many places, and this has caused me numerous crashes when trying to push hard round the bends. Also it can be quite slow and twisty in certain places, where I sometimes wish I had a 26er, not 29er. People complain about the volume of bike traffic on weekends but I've never found it a problem. Only major problem for me is having to contend with the truly awful M6 to get there by car.
