Ullswater, Lake District Mountain Biking

Ullswater in the Lake District is an iconic natural mountain bike destination, covering several ungraded natural routes from around 11km up to 30km-plus. Descents can be technical and steep, and the climbs are known to be tough.

The Trails

  • Ullswater Lakeside - a technical bridleway hugging the southern bank of the lake between Sandwick and Patterdale, popular for its views across the water as much as the riding.
  • Cockpit to Howtown - a well-regarded natural descent on the eastern side of Ullswater, considered one of the best in the Lakes.
  • High Street and Ullswater - a bigger day out taking in the high ridge of High Street before dropping back down towards the lake.

Getting Here

  • Glenridding, at the southern end of Ullswater, is a good general base for routes around the lake: Beckside Car Park, Greenside Road, Glenridding, CA11 0QG.
  • Depending on the specific route you're riding, Patterdale, Howtown or Pooley Bridge may be a more direct start point.
