Description

Gawton Gravity Hub downhill mountain biking site is run by the volunteer club Gawton Gravity Hub (previously known as Woodland Riders). It can be found in the South West of England, near Tavistock, West Devon.

Like this?

These trails offer over 500ft of descent. There are around 9 tracks incorporating a range of reds up to black graded trails and the terrain is a mixture of flowing single track to root-laden, rocky, steep, and technical descent. The uplift is run by The Bike Bus, and you can book from the website.

It is on private land, which is leased from the Landowners and so, as a result, you must be a member with a day or annual pass to ride (check out the website).

HSD - Red

  • The HSD track is graded red, is one mile long, and has a vertical drop of 440 feet. It's the most popular downhill track here and has a selection of multi-hit lines that are flowing. It's popular with all ability levels and is a good downhill trail for the beginner downhiller. It is suitable for adaptive mountain bikes.

Proper Job - Double Red

  • The Proper Job double red graded track is a recently completed trail. It is 0.8 miles long and has 450 feet of vertical drop for you to play with.  It's feature intensive and has big berms and steep descents.

Super Tavi - Black

  • The Super Tavi track is graded black and is an extreme track. It is 0.7 miles long and has 500 feet of vertical drop.

Mega Tavi - Double Black

  • A steep downhill line (starts off on Super Tavi) and cuts off before the second road gap. Allegedly, the steepest trail in England.

Egypt - Double Black

  • The Egypt double black graded track is 0.5 miles in length and has 380 feet of vertical drop. It has a reputation for being one of the hardest tracks in the UK. The terrain is rooty, steep and rocky.

The Rattler - Double Black

  • An Intermediate/Expert jump line that joins into Super Tavi. Includes gaps from 13ft to 25ft

Valhalla - Double Black

  • 70% natural lines which is steep, technical, and fast

Rooty Rutz - Red to Double Black

  • Starts as Red and ends as Black. Steep and flowing getting progressively harder as you ride down

Pump Track

  • There is also a progressive pump track graded blue but for everyone.

Tavi-Woods

  • Tavi-Woodlands was demolished at the end of August 2022 and is no longer run by the club. Read why here: Tavi Woods No More

Membership and Day Passes

  • You must be able to always provide proof of Membership/Day membership when at Gawton Gravity Hub. Membership and day pass along with further information can be obtained from the website

Scary

Don't bother unless you are comfortable on very steep downhill runs, this is not for beginners.

What do you like?

Only went to Gawton, but if you want downhill this is up there with the best. I generally find English red routes are easier than Scottish ones, but not here. The "easiest" HSD is probably the hardest red route I've come across. Great effort for a volunteer made course without access to FC cash. Unusually starts at the top, so you can have a downhill run straight from the car park, but of course you pay for it later.

What could be improved?

Visited in the middle of a monsoon, so expected it to be slippery, but the clay? based soil left an exceptionally slippery coating over everything. Allegedly there's a café and changing rooms but nothing was open on my visit.

Fantastic!

I have been a member here for a year and a half now, and regularly make the trip from Exeter to ride these fantastic, World quality trails just make sure you buy a day pass/membership before visiting!

What do you like?

Track by Track: HSD: It stands for high speed descent and doesn't disappoint! First track I ever rode here, and one I still use as a warm up each time. This is a fast, flowing descent that can be ridden on any bike. The quicker you go the better it gets! Each transition can be pumped or popped to link it together and chasing your mates down it is great fun. Proper Job: The newest of the four tracks at Gawton. It opened last year and subsequently held the South West Championships. Conceived as a stepping stone between the red HSD and the two black runs it is easy to see why it has become instantly and unanimously popular. it features the same fast flowing blueprint set up by HSD but combines it with big, bike park style turns, small jumps and drops and fiendish rock gardens. A fantastic adrenaline fuelled ride from the opening slalom to the snaking switchback finale. Egypt: In a word, technical. What awaits you from the off is a steep rooty nightmare that will require some serious skills to clean effectively. Along the way you'll encounter flat sections where keeping speed is essential, a large, multiple line choice rock garden and tight, steep, alpine style switchbacks. As hard as it is, the rewarding feeling at the end is unbeatable. Super Tavi: A perfect combination of all the above. Fast flowing sections combine with technical switchbacks to form the most challenging of all the tracks. The two large road gaps may look intimidating, but are avoidable, and it's well worth testing yourself against the rest of the track. Also, Woodland Riders have a timing system in place so you can test yourself against pros such as Gee Atherton and Aaron Gwin! So there you have it, four varied and exciting tracks, downhill perfection!

What could be improved?

The punishment for all the lovely downtime is an unfortunately long push up. How ever, recently a new, surfaced , smooth push up has been installed to make it a bit easier and an uplift has started running for those that wish. It is a bout a twenty minute walk and I wouldn't expect to get more than 10 full runs in in a day. The car park also has some cafe and changing facilities but they have never been open when I go so I can't comment on them
