Gawton Gravity Hub

This downhill mountain biking site in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, near Tavistock in West Devon, is run by the volunteer club Gawton Gravity Hub (previously known as Woodland Riders) on land leased from private landowners. It offers around 9 gravity-fed tracks from red to double black plus a pump track, with over 500ft of descent on tap. There's no uplift, so you push back to the top between runs (around 20 minutes, and rideable rather than a hike-a-bike), but most riders still get around 8 runs in over a day. You will need a day pass or annual membership to ride, available from the club's website.

The Trails

• HSD - Red: Gawton's most popular track and a good starting point for downhill riding, with smooth, flowing multi-hit lines and easy-going curves that reward riders of every level, from first-timers to the downhill elite. It runs for around a mile with roughly 440ft of vertical drop, and is suitable for adaptive mountain bikes.
• Proper Job - Double Red: A flowing 0.8-mile track with rock gardens, big berms, drops and tables and around 450ft of vertical drop. A good place to build the skills needed for Gawton's steeper black tracks.
• Super Tavi - Black: Gawton's elite-level track, ridden by World Cup racers including Gee Atherton, Aaron Gwin and Danny Hart. It's around 0.7 miles long with roughly 500ft of vertical drop and offers no easy lines, a genuine test for confident downhill riders.
• Mega Tavi - Double Black: An extension of Super Tavi and one of the steepest descents in the UK. Worth walking first, it's steep enough to catch out even confident riders.
• Egypt - Double Black: A root-strewn, rocky, technical track plunging through the forest, with a reputation as one of the hardest in the UK. It's around 0.5 miles long with roughly 380ft of vertical drop.
• The Rattler - Double Black: An intermediate to expert jump line feeding into Super Tavi, with gaps ranging from 13ft to 25ft.
• Valhalla - Double Black: A step up again from Super Tavi, shaped with input from elite and World Cup riders. Around 70% natural lines, steep, technical and fast.
• Rock n Rolla - Red to Double Black: Gawton's newest track, a natural, scraped-in line that starts as a red and finishes as a double black, with steep, flowing turns that get progressively harder on the way down.
• Pump Track - Blue: A progressive pump track for riders of all abilities, built to help develop the pumping skills you'll use across the rest of the trails. It's currently closed for redevelopment, so check the website or Facebook Group before you visit if this is the main draw.

Admission and Membership

Gawton Gravity Hub sits on private land leased from local landowners, so you need a day pass or annual membership to ride and to use the car park. Day passes cost £10 and annual membership is £50, both available to buy online via the club's website. Carry proof of your pass or membership, plus photo ID, and display it on your dashboard when you park.

There's no uplift at Gawton: getting back to the top is a rideable push of around 20 minutes, and most riders manage around 8 runs across a day.

Getting Here

Gawton Gravity Hub is just off the B3257 Gulworthy to Bere Alston road. From Tavistock, take the A390 towards Gunnislake. At the Gulworthy roundabout, turn left onto the B3257 towards Bere Alston and follow it for around 2 miles, passing two right-hand turns signposted Morwellham Quay. At the end of Mile Level, where the road bends left, take the track on the right signed for Gawton Gravity Hub. The car park is 100m down the track.

Parking is controlled by West Devon Borough Council and is free for members and day-pass holders, so display your pass or membership on your dashboard, otherwise you risk a parking ticket.
