Description
BMX Track Sloughbottom Park is Norwich's BMX race track, home of Norwich Flyers BMX Club and a free public amenity open all year. The club welcomes riders from age 5 to over 50, from beginners to former world champions.
The Track
- A full BMX race track with a start hill and pale hard-packed straights and rollers, set between grass banks.
- Norwich Flyers, formed in 1984, lost its old track at Costessey Pits in 2004 when the land was sold. Working with Norwich City Council, the club had a new track at Sloughbottom Park by October 2005, and "resurfacing and tarmacking work was completed in September 2008" (Norwich Flyers).
The Club
- The club is non-profit and volunteer-run, with a British Cycling coach and club bikes for riders to use. Bikes and kit can be hired during club sessions.
- Club activity runs on Saturdays all year, from 9am in winter, mixing coaching, club racing and open gates, with Wednesday evening sessions in summer. Check the club's Facebook page for current times.
- Gate sessions are free, so practice costs nothing, but you need to be a club member to race. Membership is 15 pounds a year, or 40 pounds for a family. Prices are subject to change, check the website.
- A full-face helmet, long-fingered gloves, a long-sleeved top and trousers (or shorts with knee and shin pads) are compulsory.
