Avon Tyrrell Mountain Bike Trails

Avon Tyrrell mountain bike centre is a UK Youth-run outdoor activity centre in the New Forest, Hampshire. It has a Blue and a Red short mountain bike trail and a Pump and Gravity Track, with a North Shore skills area and an all-ability track also previously part of the offering, so there is something for families through to experienced riders.

The Trails

Blue Route

• An easy, accessible route around the site, suitable for families and for BOMA all-terrain wheelchairs, which can be hired if pre-booked.

Red Route

• For intermediate to experienced riders, with technical sections, steep descents and drops.

Pump and Gravity Tracks

• Berms, table tops and rollers built to sharpen your skills. Riders must be 12 or over and complete an induction, arranged at Reception, before using this track. It is for use with your own bike only, not Avon Tyrrell hire bikes, and a day pass applies.

North Shore Park

• Avon Tyrrell has previously run a North Shore skills area, an extension of the Red loop built from raised timber features in the Canadian North Shore style. This wasn't listed on the venue's current website at the time of this review, so check with Reception that it's still open before you travel.

All Ability Track

• Avon Tyrrell has previously offered a 3km all-ability track suitable for family rides, adapted bikes and wheelchairs. This wasn't listed on the venue's current website at the time of this review, so check with Reception that it's still available before you travel.

Bike Hire and Guided Sessions

• Bike hire runs daily, with collection between 9am and 10am and return by 4:30pm. A Cytech-trained mechanic is on site for servicing and repairs.
• Guided skills sessions with mountain bike instructors can be arranged.
• Residential groups can hire a good number of bikes at a time. This must be arranged in advance of your visit so a member of staff is available to fit and sign out the bikes.

Beyond the Trails

• Avon Tyrrell is a UK Youth outdoor activity centre set in 65 acres around a Grade I listed Victorian manor house, so there is plenty to combine a ride with.
• Accommodation includes family camping and lodge breaks.
• Cafe Explore serves food and drinks on site.
• Beyond biking, the centre runs a wider programme of outdoor activities including watersports, climbing and archery, along with accessible adventures for riders and families with additional needs.

Gravel Riding

• Avon Tyrrell's own tracks are short and purpose-built rather than gravel routes, but the surrounding New Forest has an extensive network of Forestry England waymarked gravel tracks, so download a route or use GPS navigation before you set off further afield.

Getting Here

• Avon Tyrrell is signposted from the A31 near Burley. Leave the A31 for Burley, follow the village centre triangular junction right towards Bransgore, continue to the crossroads at Thorney Hill and turn right, signposted Avon Tyrrell. Take the right fork onto the private drive and follow it to Avon Tyrrell House.
• Day visitors are welcome. Bike hire costs £25 for an adult full day and £15 for a child full day, and a £4 day pass covers Pump and Gravity Track access for riders bringing their own bike, though it's worth checking current prices with the venue before you visit.
