Description
Culloden Woods is a Forestry and Land Scotland conifer wood at Smithton, on the eastern edge of Inverness, laced with forest roads, waymarked walking paths and a network of rider-made singletrack through the pines. It is a free local riding spot close enough to reach from town by bike, and Inverness riders have ridden it for years.
The Trails
- Forest roads and wide paths make easy loops through the wood, and link to the Culloden Battlefield Trail.
- Off the main paths is a network of natural singletrack through pine and fern, built and changed by local riders over the years. Lines come and go, so ride what you can see before you commit, and expect roots and mud after rain.
- The wood is shared with walkers, runners and dog walkers, and the trails are not maintained or waymarked for bikes. Give way on the paths and leave the wood as you found it.
Women's Groups and Sessions
- Inverness MTB Coaching runs women-only coaching sessions in Culloden Woods for riders new to the sport and those already confident on blue trails. See the women+ mountain biking guide for more groups and sessions.
Beyond the Wood
- The wood holds the Prisoners' Stone and St Mary's Well, a traditional clootie well, and the Culloden Battlefield is close by.
- For a waymarked network nearby, see Abriachan, and for a pump track in town, Inverness Pump Track.
