Description
Crombie Country Park is a wooded reservoir park near Monikie in Angus, run by ANGUSalive, with a cross-country mountain bike course of around 6km looping the edge of the park. The course is old-school singletrack through the woods, with short boardwalks over boggy ground, and it hosts British Cycling cross-country racing. Easier park paths circle the reservoir, and there is a small cycle track for mountain bikes.
The Trails
- Crombie XC course: a lap of around 6km (about four miles) around the edge of the park. Storm Arwen brought down trees across Crombie in late 2021, and local rider Chris Golightly built the course over about six months from the fallen timber and the new paths walkers had made around the damage, with help from Dundee Thistle cycling club and the support of ANGUSalive. It is a classic cross-country course: technical singletrack through the woods, with rock and log features and short North Shore style boardwalks and bridges over bogs and streams. The ground is relatively flat, but a lap is a demanding test of fitness and bike handling.
- Park trails: a circuit of around 4km on gravel paths around Crombie Reservoir, with shorter paths through the woods to either side. This is easy riding for families and new riders, shared with walkers, so ride at a friendly pace.
- Cycle track: ANGUSalive lists a mini cycle track for mountain bikes in the park.
The course is not waymarked or graded like a trail centre. Parts of it close to other visitors on race days, when marshals are out on the course.
Racing
Dundee Thistle promotes British Cycling cross-country races on the course, and Crombie has hosted a round of the Scottish XC Series (SXC), with racing from under-8s to Masters. Spectating is free.
Women's Groups and Sessions
ANGUSalive's Countryside Adventure team runs Dirt Divas, female-only coached mountain bike sessions for ages 16 and over, here at Crombie and at nearby Monikie Country Park. Sessions are led by a British Cycling Level 2 leader, cover bike handling, climbs, descents and technical features at the group's pace, and suit new riders as well as those sharpening their skills. Bikes and helmets are included. Book through ANGUSalive Countryside Adventure.
