Glyn Cothi Wind Farm proposals and Brechfa MTB Trails Potential Impact

Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru (Trydan), the Welsh Government’s renewable energy developer, has announced proposals for a new wind farm and battery storage project in Brechfa Forest.

Like this?

The proposed Glyn Cothi Wind Farm could host up to 27 turbines, generating up to 162 MW of electricity – enough to power around 144,000 Welsh homes. The site lies within the Welsh Government Woodland Estate, managed by Natural Resources Wales, which includes the well-known Brechfa mountain bike trails.

Trydan says its proposals will not prevent current activities in Brechfa Forest from continuing, including recreation, timber production, and existing wind generation. Brechfa is home to several established MTB routes – including the GorlechRaven, and Derwen Trails – all covered in detail in the Brechfa Mountain Bike Trails guide on iBikeRide.

Initial engagement with local communities is expected in summer 2025, with a full planning decision anticipated by 2028 and construction from 2030.

This is definitely one to watch – especially if you ride locally. Projects like this carry a lot of local sensitivity and can bring short and mid-term concern and uncertainty as well as inevitable long term disruption and potential changes, but they can also create opportunities. With the right conversations, they can be used to secure improvements to trail access, infrastructure, and wider investment in the area including the trail network. We shall monitor and see.

If you're in the area and want to stay updated or join the conversation, check out the Brechfa Forest Mountain Biking Facebook group.

You can view the full project information and map via the Glyn Cothi Wind Farm project site.
