Brechfa Forest - Byrgwm, near Carmarthen

  • Byrgwm is two miles north-east of Brechfa village on the B4310. From the A40 between Llandeilo and Carmarthen, take the B4310 towards Brechfa village. Car parking is free of charge. There are two trails here the Black Raven and the Blue and Green Derwen

The Black Raven

  • The Raven is just under 19km and has great singletrack, shore, gnarly sections and steep descents with jumps and berms. This trail is suitable for technically proficient experienced riders.

The Blue and Green Derwen

  • The Derwen Blue 4.7 km (or green option 9.2km) Derwen trail is set in a beautiful setting again and is suitable for families and beginners.

Brechfa Forest – Abergorlech, near Carmarthen

  • Sifigwm woodland car park is an alternative starting point for the mountain biking trail. This quiet and remote car park is accessible from a minor road off the B4337, half a mile from the village of Rhydcymerau (OS grid reference: SN 553 395). Here you can find the Red graded Gorlech trail

The Red Gorlech

  • The Gorlech is 19km and has sweet singletrack, swooping berms, jumps and the surface is hard, all weather and fast. Suitable for intermediate riders with some technical experience.

Other Stuff

  • The Raven (plus Derwen) and the Gorlech trails are at different car parks. The Trailhead at Byrgwm is for for Derwen and Raven trails and the Trailhead at Abergorlech is for the Gorlech trail.
  • Brechfa MTB (CIC) hold the maintenance contract with Natural Resources Wales to help maintain the Brechfa MTB trail network.
  • They are also a stone's throw from Hafod Trails a new uplift bike park that is family and kid-friendly but has something for all abilities from green to black trails. 5 trails initially will go live with a good mix of flow and tech. And within driving distance of Afan Forest and the Cwm Rhaeadr.

Brechfa trails are located in the scenic Towy valley and are absolutely unspoilt natural routes. Visiting there once a week, and brings a smile every time I visit. Breathtakingly beautiful area.

Best trails in Wales

Outstanding trails, very well maintained despite no cost to use them. Plenty of variety and very suitable for beginners. Lots of trail intersections so you can vary your ride.

What do you like?

Trails always seem to be looked after - fallen branches quickly removed, etc. Some of the trails would not be out of place at a bike park.

What could be improved?

I can't think of any, Brechfa is my favourite trail center.

rode the gorlech and raven on the same day at the end of September I new it was going to be wet and muddy because it rained all week !! No surprise not having any grip going uphill!!! Black trails are not always nutter downhills they are gradded on technical difficulty and how fit you need to be to tackle the accents . A great day doing 40 k . Fully recommend doing both trails in one hit . Even when moist !

What do you like?

Proper trails that need to be ridden in the spirit they were designed . Great pub in Abergolech

What could be improved?

Pub shuts at 3 in the week

Raven Route end of Sept 17

I went here on the Friday of my 4 day Afan weekender and probably wish i hadn't Was very muddy and really hard to get traction on the uphills Hardly any flow and not many downhills. The only saving point was i combined alot of the blue which was a very good flowing blue route. Perhaps the red is much better and should of chosen that one instead of the black Its strange because i completed the Raven & Gorlech around 7 years ago and thought they were good then? Unless the trail centres i now ride are alot better compared

What do you like?

No Parking Fee Lovely area Some good bits but not much Natural trails

What could be improved?

Very wet & muddy and made the ascents very hard For all the climbing this doesn't offer much flow or downhills?

My local trail centre

Really good trail centre for all levels of riders. Seriously. Have some food at The Shed in Byrgwm, you won't be disappointed.

What do you like?

I ride here a lot. Love the Gorlech (red) trail. The Blue & Black are nice trails too. The Blue & Black are easily combined to get the best of both trails. Rideable in all weathers, stunning forest and views over the valley. Byrgwm car park has the nicest gourmet burger van I have eaten at Which is there on the weekends. The food is epic!!

What could be improved?

Trails could do with a little maintenance. Some berms are a tad worn so you can't fully commit to them. No big issue though. Some of the braking bumps add to the fun though!

Would you recommend?

Yes
