Description

Greno Woods can be found in Grenoside, just North of Sheffield and are across the road from its sister site Wharncliffe Woods.

Greno Woods is managed by Ride Sheffield who also manages Parkwoods Springs, Lady Canning's, and Bolehills BMX.

Greno Woods

  • There is one main loop which is made up of 3 maintained downhill trails all connected by fire-road climbs. The loop kicks off just across the road from the Woodhead Road Forestry Commission car park.
  • This loop consists of 2 red tracks known as Pub Run and Steel City (which has a Black opt-in) and one black called DH3 (big rollable jumps and a steep section). The whole loop is connected by a red bridleway.
  • The loop is 5.3km long in total consisting of the red at 3.7km and the black which is 1.7km long.

Wharncliffe Woods

  • Wharncliffe Woods are across the road from Greno Woods and are less maintained and not waymarked so best to hook up with a local. There are numerous downhill runs. The Downhill area is steep, rocky, and technical. Some of the famous runs are Vajazzle, Carling Tree, Jump Track, Varsity, Truffle Shuffle, Fast Track, Nemba, No Human, and The Dogs Bollocks.
  • There is an old 16km technical XC trail that is in a poor condition but on a dry day, you can put most bits of it together. To get to it you come right out of the back of the car park and the trail starts on your right.

Other Stuff

  • Ride Sheffield trail advocacy group manage and run an active community for Greno Woods
  • Greno Woods is famous for events like the Steel City Downhill
  • Driving forces at Greno Woods are Ride Sheffield, Sheffield Wildlife Trust, Peaty’s Steel City DH, and of course Steve Peat himself.

Wharncliffe - Grin factor 99

I'd not been to Wharncliffe since 1993, since then the locals have been building and building. Yes there is a XC marked loop but I didnt do it. Instead I did some of the short steep techy awesome trails - I did have a look at mini-whistler and watch some of the DH blokes on big bikes do the big gaps and even rode a little of the easier stuff there but mainly it was the old school lines I rode on my 140mm trail bike. Just didnt have enough time in a day to see it all, or even go over to Grenoside - only 17 miles but 3300ft on the garmin which strava robbed almost 1000ft of of so its a hilly ride. Immense fun with a little group and great terrain. You can see why Steve Peat has such skill with this as his back yard!

What do you like?

Proper English forest, no conifers Loads and loads of 1mins awesome DH trails

What could be improved?

Slog/push-up back to the top

Would you recommend?

*Yes*

I rode here a few years ago and it pissed down relentlessly. The day was awesome even though my gears broke and ended up with a singlespeed for the day. It has some of the funnest downhill and drops you can find.

What do you like?

If you like steep you will love this. If you like rocky you will love this more. If you like technical and challenging in a beautiful wooded surrounded you have found nirvana

What could be improved?

Some of erosion of trails is evident. Very limited facilites beyond a car park.

Would you recommend?

*Yes*
