Description

Silton Forest DH Track

Silton Forest Downhill has been running since 2006, a single volunteer-built downhill track on the western edge of the North York Moors National Park, about 40 minutes from Leeds near Northallerton. The run is split into five distinct sections, from a fast, open start and rooty singletrack through a stump field and a choice of off-camber lines to a closing run of berms and a double. It sits five miles from Sutton Bank MTB base.

The Trails

  • The track opens open and fast with a large step-down, then tight corners lead into a fire road sprint back into the trees.
  • Across the fire road, narrow singletrack full of roots and rocks steps things up, getting steeper and more technical on the run to the second fire road crossing.
  • The second fire road crossing leads into a tough stump field and a run of tight berms.
  • A line choice follows: drop straight off the "elevator" onto fast off-camber ground, or run wide onto the newer, more technical off-camber high line, which spits out onto a rock garden and rejoins the original track.
  • The run finishes by crossing a berm and bridge, sprinting to a hip and a step-up, ripping the final berms and sprinting to the closing double.

Getting Here

Turn off the A19 at the signposted turn for Over Silton (the sign comes up late, so watch for it). Continue through the village, passing the church, then take the sharp left turn opposite the houses. Follow the track to Moor Lane Car Park, the main parking point for Silton Forest (Forestry England, OS grid reference SE467937). There are no parking charges.

The track is built and maintained by local volunteers rather than a trail centre operator, so it is not signed or waymarked. Download a route or use GPS navigation before you set off.

Local Organisation

Silton Forest Downhill is a project of SingletrAction, a volunteer group that designs, builds and maintains trails in the area. Check their Facebook page for conditions, work days and current track news.
