Description

Hamilton Hill is Lincolnshire's first and only mountain bike park, a volunteer-built hillside of short downhill lines on the high point of Willingham Wood, just off the Tealby Road outside Market Rasen. The lines pack in a wide mix of features, from rollable options for newer riders to big jumps for those who want them, and the walk back to the top takes only a few minutes, so it is all about laps. It is free to ride and always open, with the Sunnyside Up cafe across the road and forest road riding in the wider Willingham Woods.

The Trails

  • Downhill lines: a hillside of short downhill runs, with features to build your skills on and jumps for more experienced riders.
  • Rider levels: lines to suit everyone from young and new riders to experts. Ride within your abilities and build up to the bigger features.
  • Push up: there is no uplift, so you push back up between runs, off the trails themselves.
  • In the wet: the trails are natural dirt and get sloppy after rain. The volunteers appreciate riders who wait for them to dry out rather than carving them up.

Riding at the Hill

You ride at your own risk. The rules posted at the Hill are:

  • Helmets must be worn, even on a slow ride with the kids: "no helmet, no ride". The volunteers' biggest worry is the Hill being closed after an accident.
  • Walk the trails before you ride them.
  • Don't push or ride up the trails.
  • No digging without permission.
  • Children under 16 need to be with an adult.
  • Take your litter home.

Watch out for other riders, and if you are walking in with young riders to watch, keep to the side and never walk up the trails.

Local Organisations

Hamilton Hill is built and looked after by volunteers, and it has been free to ride for more than 12 years: there is no membership or fee. New lines have to follow the Hill's build rules, so if you would like to help shape the park, get in touch through the Hamilton Hill Mountain Bike Park Facebook page, which also posts maintenance days and updates.

Gravel Riding

Willingham Woods carries an unwaymarked forest road network beyond the bike park itself, so download a route or use GPS navigation before you set off.

Beyond the Trails

The Sunnyside Up cafe and farm shop sits across the Tealby Road from the trails, for a coffee or bacon roll before or after a ride. Willingham Woods is a large expanse of Forestry England pinewoods with plenty of forest road cycling beyond the bike park, and its main car park and picnic site are on the A631 on the other side of the woods. Getting Here

The trails are in the woods off the B1203 Tealby Road between Market Rasen and Tealby, opposite the Sunnyside Up cafe (nearest postcode LN8 3UL).
