Description
GY95 Trails are the dirt jumps on the edge of Cleethorpes that local riders have been digging since 1995. Run entirely by volunteers from the charity GY95, they are one of the longest-running trail spots in the UK, and riders travel from all over the country to ride them.
The Trails
- The site is a set of hand-dug clay dirt jump lines, built and tweaked over many years. GY95 reckons a line takes around three years of building and shaping before its jumps flow together the way they want.
- Think about the skill each line needs, and only ride the sections you are comfortable with.
- Buck Beck, which runs past the trails, supplies the water that keeps the jumps in shape, and the trees round the site take the edge off the wind off the coast.
- There is a mini-ramp on site, along with a container that the volunteers use as a base.
Membership and Riding
- You need to be a GY95 member before you ride, so join through the membership page first. Members can borrow helmets, kit and, when they are available, bikes.
- The trails are open from April to November, from dawn to dusk, but not when they are wet. Riding wet jumps damages them, and repairs then fall to the volunteers.
- Everyone is expected to help keep the lines in shape, which means sweeping, wetting and dusting a line before riding it. The tools are by the water bowsers.
- The trails are for BMX and dirt jump bikes only, so leave skateboards, scooters and inline skates at home.
- GY95 advises a helmet and pads for everyone, and riders under 16 need a working brake.
- Please keep dogs off the lines and take litter home or use the bins by the mini-ramp and container.
History
- In the early 1990s, after the town's BMX track at the YMCA was bulldozed, a group of friends led by Matt Twyman started digging jumps on a patch of wasteland near Taylors Avenue in 1995. The spot became known as the G*Y*P*O trails.
- The trails were unofficial for years before the riders agreed their future with the council, and a local company delivered lorry loads of fresh clay to build with. Several of the original crew from the 1990s still sit on the GY95 committee.
- GY95, formerly the charity Giving Young People Opportunities, is now a charitable incorporated organisation. In its 30th year it received a 104,970 pound grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to record the history of BMX, skating and urban sports in North East Lincolnshire.
Jams and Community
- GY95 holds jams at the trails that draw hundreds of riders for a weekend of riding and live music by the seaside. Follow GY95 on Facebook for dates.
- The charity also runs youth projects and community events across North East Lincolnshire, and it is always looking for volunteers to help build and maintain the trails.
Also from GY95
- GY95 also runs New Waltham Race Track, a BMX race track in New Waltham, Grimsby, with track nights through the summer (GY95's racetrack page).
