Description

Gawton Gravity Hub downhill mountain biking site is run by the volunteer club Gawton Gravity Hub (previously known as Woodland Riders). It can be found in the South West of England, near Tavistock, West Devon.

Like this?

These trails offer over 500ft of descent. There are around 9 tracks incorporating a range of reds up to black graded trails and the terrain is a mixture of flowing single track to root-laden, rocky, steep, and technical descent. The uplift is run by The Bike Bus, and you can book from the website.

It is on private land, which is leased from the Landowners and so, as a result, you must be a member with a day or annual pass to ride (check out the website).

HSD - Red

  • The HSD track is graded red, is one mile long, and has a vertical drop of 440 feet. It's the most popular downhill track here and has a selection of multi-hit lines that are flowing. It's popular with all ability levels and is a good downhill trail for the beginner downhiller. It is suitable for adaptive mountain bikes.

Proper Job - Double Red

  • The Proper Job double red graded track is a recently completed trail. It is 0.8 miles long and has 450 feet of vertical drop for you to play with.  It's feature intensive and has big berms and steep descents.

Super Tavi - Black

  • The Super Tavi track is graded black and is an extreme track. It is 0.7 miles long and has 500 feet of vertical drop.

Mega Tavi - Double Black

  • A steep downhill line (starts off on Super Tavi) and cuts off before the second road gap. Allegedly, the steepest trail in England.

Egypt - Double Black

  • The Egypt double black graded track is 0.5 miles in length and has 380 feet of vertical drop. It has a reputation for being one of the hardest tracks in the UK. The terrain is rooty, steep and rocky.

The Rattler - Double Black

  • An Intermediate/Expert jump line that joins into Super Tavi. Includes gaps from 13ft to 25ft

Valhalla - Double Black

  • 70% natural lines which is steep, technical, and fast

Rooty Rutz - Red to Double Black

  • Starts as Red and ends as Black. Steep and flowing getting progressively harder as you ride down

Pump Track

  • There is also a progressive pump track graded blue but for everyone.

Tavi-Woods

  • Tavi-Woodlands was demolished at the end of August 2022 and is no longer run by the club. Read why here: Tavi Woods No More

Membership and Day Passes

  • You must be able to always provide proof of Membership/Day membership when at Gawton Gravity Hub. Membership and day pass along with further information can be obtained from the website

Don’t just ride Gawton go over to Tavi woods an shred. Love this place

What do you like?

Over the two sites there’s everything you need to develop your skills. Everyone you meet are more than happy to help you out if your struggling with something. Really friendly place to ride and the winter series is such a fun event. An always the chance a seeing a deer. With the digging that’s going on over the two sites next season should be amazing.

What could be improved?

Bins could do with being emptied a bit more that’s about it.

Proper BO

I don't like committes..

What do you like?

As the star ratings describe, superb venue for every level of rider. Chaz the guy you always see there doing stuff great bloke a serious credit to the venue. There are a couple of others but I don't know them too well. Push up is no trouble if needed, tracks are brilliant awesome in the really wet weather too.. A real all weather site.. Can't reccomended it enough.. I would happily pay double for membership..

What could be improved?

Need all the committee members to attend the site when members are riding, get feedback face to face rather than Fb page.. Only ever see Chaz, Andy down there. You say anything on the Fb page it gets blown out of context and achieves nothing..

Love this place!

What do you like?

This place is just Lovely. It never feels too busy except on a sell out race day! It's a lovely mix of natural and sculpted trails maximising the terrain. I'm not a good rider but still have great fun on the easier 2 trails and would be happy to spend all day there. Its a great place to progress. I've never felt out of place there despite my riding being on the less rad end of spectrum. Everyone is always friendly.Has an uplift!

What could be improved?

Basic facilities but has a toilet. What more could you want.

Stop thinking start living

A great place to ride. Whether starting out, developing your skills or just to shred and get loose!

What do you like?

Between the two sites Tavi and gawton have it all, fast and flowy to steep and technical as well as jumps and the pump track. To think it's all run by volunteers for only £40 a year is insane. The place is a must visit for all downhill mountain bikers. Woodlands is better suited if you are just starting, but still has so much variety in tracks that even the pros could have fun here. Gawtons HSD is its easiest track, but don't be fooled by it's red rating, I'm yet to find a red track like it. Overall an awesome place. Whether starting out, developing your skills or just to shred and get loose!

What could be improved?

None found yet

Lovin' it.

Love it - going to make even more use of it this year.

What do you like?

Awesome variety of tracks. I'm glad all abilities are made so welcome since I'm an oldie just starting out really but I get huge smiles out of doing those tracks I can on my hardtail - this year hopefully sees me finally getting my DH bike sorted and I will definitely be taking advantage of some of the booked training sessions put on at the tracks to be able to then take on the more technical stuff that I can't do just yet. A fantastic day out whether you are riding it or coming along for the occasional race events that attract some real talent. Absolutely brilliant to see the amount of mixing that goes on at the race events and normal day rides - all ages from young to 'vintage' and male and female. Hats off & real big thanks to the guys who give up their time to keep the tracks in good nick with a continuation of new tracks coming through (me and my kids love the new pump track!). Definitely recommend.

What could be improved?

None that I can think of really although it ticks me off that there are a few plonkers who need to take their rubbish home instead of leaving it to the locals to do. HSD track ok for confidant starters but I need to work out if there is something more intermediate at Gawton or to stick with Tavi Woodlands where there is probably a more even mix. Last, the price is so ridiculously good, can there really still be any cheetin tight-wads who aren't paying properly for entrance ?
