Ride the Donkey
The two red trails, the Dog and the Monkey (or combined- The Donkey) cover about 21km which is just about the right length for most. There is some sneaky climbing involved during the course of the ride which was unexpected given the southern landscape we were in.
The Dog features some quite narrow sections where many a handlebar has hit the trees. The surface is made up of some semi buried pebbles- but when these become loose they easily erode the soft soil around them leading to holes forming- this is most evident on the Seven Dwarves section of berms where every second berm is obliterated with braking bumps from those who have taken the first one too fast.
The Monkey has a good flow to it and the final descent is the highlight of the whole trail. one optional black section is about 600m long with about five technical features that definitely deserve the black rating.
I probably won't visit again unless in the area, this has nothing to do with the quality of the ride- just the sheer number of people (Strava reckons 10,000 people have ridden some sections 55,000 times between them) which comes from being so near to several cities. I'd rather drive an hour through country lanes to get to Gisburn than sit in city traffic.
What do you like?
Good amount of singletrack
Gnarly black section on The Monkey
Car Parking at the right price
What could be improved?
Busiest place I've ever been
some serious wear on the trails
could do with a bridge to take out the main road for kids
Would you recommend?
*Yes*
