Blue Bell Hill (North Downs) Aylesford

Blue Bell Hill is a chalk escarpment on the North Downs above Aylesford in Kent, with natural cross country singletrack, a handful of short, steep downhill tracks in Monk Wood, and bridleway gravel riding along the top of the ridge. The trails are informal and rider maintained rather than waymarked, so download a route or use GPS navigation before you set off.

The Trails

• Natural, unwaymarked singletrack runs across the chalk grassland and along the escarpment, mixing rocky, rooty ground with big views over the Medway valley and the Weald. The chalk base turns greasy in winter, so conditions are best in drier months.
• Monk Wood, just below the ridge near the Robin Hood pub, holds a cluster of short, steep, feature packed downhill tracks built and maintained informally by local riders. Check any line before committing, since features and gradients change without warning.
• A longer loop links Aylesford to Maidstone, climbs to Detling, follows the escarpment west, then drops towards Burham and back to Aylesford and Leybourne Lakes, for riders wanting more distance than the hill itself offers.

Blue Bell Hill is one of the North Kent riding spots followed by Medway Mountain Biking, a community group covering trails across the wider North Kent and Medway area.

Gravel Riding

The North Downs escarpment above Blue Bell Hill carries bridleways and byways that ride well on a gravel bike, running west along the top of the downs towards Detling and beyond. Kent Downs promotes this stretch as part of the North Downs Way Riders' Route for gravel and hardtail riding. Expect quiet lanes and chalk bridleway mixed in with the singletrack rather than a single dedicated waymarked loop.

Getting Here

Park at the Bluebell Hill Picnic Area car park on Common Road, Aylesford, ME5 9RG, opposite the Robin Hood pub at the top of the hill. This also serves the Kent Wildlife Trust Blue Bell Hill nature reserve and sits on the North Downs Way, with Monk Wood and the escarpment trails a short ride away. The car park gate closes in the evening, around 4.30pm in winter and 6.30pm in summer, so plan your ride to be back before then.

On-street parking is also possible on Common Road beyond the houses if the main car park is full. The nearest train station is Aylesford, around 3 miles away, with local lanes for the ride in.
