Description

Betteshanger Park MTB Trails, Kent can be found near Deal in Kent, on the site of the former Betteshanger Colliery, and offer a cross country focused mountain bike network within a large country park. The venue combines waymarked off road trails, a traffic free tarmac cycling circuit, a visitor centre with café, and the Kent Mining Museum.

Blue Trail

The main Blue Trail is being updated around a newly mapped loop of approximately 10.6 km. This is planned as the core waymarked route for families, newer riders and anyone looking for a steady cross country ride. The loop makes use of mixed woodland and reclaimed colliery terrain with generally moderate gradients.

  • Approximately 10.6 km of waymarked blue route (in development)
  • Suitable for families, beginners and intermediate riders
  • Flow based singletrack through woodland and open ground
  • Designed as a single, coherent loop starting and finishing near the main hub
  • New signage planned once the route is finalised

Red Trail Options

Historically the MTB area has included red graded options branching from the woodland network. These provide more challenging riding for confident riders where retained within the updated layout. They are typically shorter segments that add technical interest alongside the main blue line.

Events and Community

Betteshanger Park is used by local cycling clubs and community groups for coached sessions, youth activities and events. The traffic free tarmac circuit and the MTB trails are both used at different times, so riders are advised to check any advertised closures or private bookings before travelling.

Facilities

  • Visitor centre with café and indoor seating
  • Kent Mining Museum at the main hub
  • Approximately 3 km traffic free tarmac cycling circuit
  • Bike hire on site when operating
  • Toilets and hand washing facilities
  • Large on site car park with pay on exit system
  • Children's play areas and walking routes
  • The Canterbury Bike Project are developing an inclusive cycling club at Betteshanger Park, offering adaptive bikes such as refurbished tricycles and support from experienced staff to help riders of all abilities enjoy safe and accessible cycling. Legacy trail maps

Older online maps and GPS recordings may show a larger number of short blue and red segments within the woodland. The current project is focused on creating a clear 10.6 km blue loop and updating the wider network, so visiting riders should follow on site signage and any official park mapping rather than relying on historic third party maps.
