The Trails
The trails here are built for hardcore, pro-level downhill riding rather than casual recreation. Expect open sections, big bus stops, steep drops of 5 feet or more, jumps, gap jumps, step downs, off-camber sections, roots and rocks across the blue, red and black graded lines. The venue is well known as the home of the Dragon Downhill Welsh Championships, and much of the terrain is aimed at experienced and race-level riders.
Outside of official race events there is no vehicle access to this area, so casual riders are better served by one of the organised practice and uplift days run at Mountain Ash by the Welsh Downhill Mountain Bike Association (WDMBA), which give riders and bikes a lift to the top of the track.
Local Organisation
Trail updates and community discussion happen through two Facebook groups: the Mountain Ash Downhill Facebook group for general trail news, and the Aberdare MTB Facebook group, whose members carry out ongoing maintenance and development work on the trails.
Getting Here
From the South and M4 take Junction 32 and head north on the A470 past Pontypridd. At the first roundabout, take the first exit toward Mountain Ash and Aberdare on the A4059. After around two miles, look for the forestry commission entrance on your right. Outside of official events there is no vehicle access to this area, so you will need to park somewhere nearby. There is a layby a quarter of a mile down the road.
