Description
Moelfre Hall Downhill Track and Cross Country Trails
Moelfre Hall is a private downhill venue near Oswestry, close to Llansilin on the Wales/Shropshire border, built around a 2.3km Black-graded downhill track with a natural 4X track at the bottom of the hill. Access has historically been by advance booking only, arranged through MTB Uplifts, but we have not been able to confirm whether uplift days are still running here: the venue no longer appears on national race calendars and we could not verify recent activity. Check directly with MTB Uplifts before planning a visit. There is also good cross-country riding nearby in the Ceiriog Valley.

The Trails
The main event is the 2.3km Moelfre DH track: fast, with tight sections, some sharp drops and off-camber turns running the length of the hillside. At the bottom sits a natural 4X track, rougher and more open than most UK 4X courses, with rollers and whoops to pump, a few chunky jumps, and some flat-out sections. Both have hosted national-level racing in the past, including rounds of the British Downhill Series and the British 4X National Championships.
Uplift and Access
Moelfre Hall is private land with no public access without booking ahead. Uplift days have historically been run by MTB Uplifts, but we could not confirm current activity here: there's no recent event coverage, and the venue is absent from the latest published British Downhill Series calendar. If you're considering a visit, check directly with MTB Uplifts (website or Facebook) first rather than turning up on spec, since we can't confirm this is still running on the old informal basis.
Cross Country
Away from the DH track, the Ceiriog Valley has good cross-country riding nearby. FlatTyres MTB publish a moderate-graded route around Gyrn Moelfre starting from the car park at the Community Centre in Glyn Ceiriog, around 17.7 miles for the medium version, on a mix of loose rock, muddy ruts, grass and some tarmac, with GPX and OS map references, so download a route or use GPS navigation before you set off.
Bike Shop
Bikeworks in Oswestry (95 Beatrice Street) stocks mountain, road and hybrid bikes and runs a workshop for servicing and repairs.
Getting Here
From Oswestry, head out on the B4580 past the Old Race Course, through Llawnt and Rhydycroesau to Llansilin. Turn right just after the phone box, then first right by the 4x4 garage, then first right again, signposted Moelfre. Follow the lane up and left for about a mile, turn right at the bottom of the dip, then continue up narrow lanes for around a mile to reach the venue. Sat nav: aim for Llansilin or SY10 7QJ, then follow the directions above for the final approach.
