Description

The Strathpeffer mountain bike trails run through Torachilty Forest, just over a mile from Contin and 30 minutes north of Inverness. The network includes a red-graded 12.5km trail and an ungraded 10km route through the hills above Strathpeffer, managed by Forestry and Land Scotland with trail work by local volunteers. The forest is home to the annual Strathpuffer 24-hour winter endurance race.

The Trails

  • Strathpeffer Trail (Red, 12.5km): The Strathpuffer race circuit, with roots, rocks, singletrack, steep climbs and descents. Waymarked, but a trail map is recommended to locate the start. Maps are available from Square Wheels cycle shop in Strathpeffer village.
  • Knockfarrel and Cnoc Mor (Ungraded, 10km): A technically demanding route taking in the hillforts above Strathpeffer. No formal waymarking on this route.

Local Organisation

Highland Trail Riders is the volunteer trail association for the Contin and Strathpeffer area, working with Forestry and Land Scotland on trail maintenance and development.

The Strathpuffer

  • Torachilty Forest is home to the Strathpuffer 24-hour race, held each January. The 12.5km lap course runs through the forest in near-total darkness, making it one of the most iconic midwinter endurance events on the MTB calendar.

Strathpeffer Bike Zone

  • For beginners and younger riders, the Strathpeffer Bike Zone in Strathpeffer Community Park opened in May 2026, featuring a pump track, surface descent and beginner trail. See the separate listing on iBikeRide for full details.
