Description

The Wee Toon mountain bike trails are located in Beinn Ghuilean forest, on the southern edge of Campbeltown on the Kintyre Peninsula. The forest is managed by Forestry and Land Scotland. Important: Major felling operations are underway at Beinn Ghuilean to remove larch trees affected by Phytophthora ramorum disease. Felling began in February 2026 and is anticipated to continue until spring 2027. Access is currently restricted to weekends only, with no access during active work zones.

Check the FLS Beinn Ghuilean page for current access status before visiting. The long-term plan for the forest involves the removal of all existing conifers and replanting with broadleaved species, which will significantly change the character of the site and may affect the trails permanently.

The Trails

  • Wee Toon Blue Trail (blue, 2.7km): An unsurfaced forest track with easy climbs and descents overlooking Davaar Island and Campbeltown. Suitable for families and beginners. Subject to current access restrictions.
  • Wee Toon Red Trail (red, 2km): More challenging, with narrow singletrack and technical sections. Features include boardwalks, moderate steps, drop-offs and cambers. Subject to current access restrictions.
  • The two trails can be ridden separately or linked together for a combined 4.7km ride. Walkers also use these trails, so ride with consideration throughout.
  • Trail maps are available from the Aqualibrium Leisure Centre in Campbeltown.

Getting Here

  • There is no car park at the trail entrance. The forest is a 2.5km ride or walk from Campbeltown town centre. From the town, follow the B842 along Witchburn Road, then turn left onto Tomaig Road. Follow Tomaig Road uphill past the houses and continue straight ahead at the sharp right-hand bend to reach the forest entrance. Street parking is available on Tomaig Road near the houses below the forest.
  • Campbeltown is around 2.5 hours from Glasgow by road via the A83. There are regular bus services from Glasgow to Campbeltown operated by West Coast Motors.
