Description

Kirkhill Forest sits just a few miles west of Aberdeen off the A96, managed by Forestry and Land Scotland. The forest offers a compact but well-organised mix of mountain bike trails ranging from a purpose-built fun park to a longer waymarked loop, making it a popular evening and weekend ride for Aberdeen riders. Parking is free and there are no facilities on site.

The Trails

  • MTB Fun Park (blue, 1.6km): A purpose-built blue-graded trail packed with features including jumps, berms, bumps and switchbacks. The trail climbs through woodland before descending. A good introduction to trail riding for those developing their skills.
  • Kirkhill Loop (11km, waymarked): A family-friendly loop starting from the MTB Fun Park, climbing via fire road to the Tappie Tower at the summit of Tyrebagger Hill with views over Aberdeen and towards Bennachie. The descent back to the car park offers a choice of three singletrack sections. Waymarked with white discs.
  • South Spur (0.8km): A short but steep, rough and rocky optional section starting from the MTB Fun Park for more experienced riders. Follows white markers off the main Kirkhill Loop.
  • North Spur: A multi-user track shared with walkers and horse riders, linking the East Woodlands car park to the Kirkhill Loop. Waymarked with white markers. Ride with consideration for other users throughout.
