Description

Innerleithen and the Golfie mountain bike trails are in the Tweed Valley just outside of Peebles on the Scottish borders. They are two (predominately) Downhill bases within riding distance of each other.

Like this?

In Innerleithen there is a red XC as well as 4 official downhill trails; Matador, Cresta Run, Gold Run and Make or Break.

A short pedal away across the town is the world famous Golfie (in Caberston Forest), a network of off-piste semi-official downhill runs.

Innerleithen

Innerleithen Downhill

There are four downhill runs. All are equally thrilling and range from 0.9 to 2.3km in descent.

  • Make or Brake: 0.9 miles / 1.45km
  • Matador: 1.2 miles / 1.9km
  • Gold Run: 0.9 miles / 1.4km
  • Cresta Run: 0.9 miles / 1.5km
  • Double D (optional line): 0.4km
  • The Matador is the most famous but the others (Crest Run, Gold Run, and Make or Break) are equally good.
  • Mega Track
    • This trail is a large-scale, bike-park style line built into the Golfie hillside, defined by huge machine-built berms and sustained high-speed flow. The layout combines long, fast sections with occasional tighter corners, encouraging riders to link turns smoothly rather than rely on isolated features. Small jumps and shark-fin style shapes are present, but the focus is firmly on carrying speed and rhythm through the trail. It opened in December 2025.
  • All these routes are Orange Graded BIKE Park Extreme with small, medium and large features.
  • There are tricky rock steps, 8ft-rock drops, rock chutes, doubles and gap jumps, bomb holes, rooty drops, big berms and the rest.
  • All four were built by local trail builder and hero Dik Hamilton. Full face helmet, gloves, body armour and a Downhill specific bike are strongly recommended for all trails.
  • To get to the start of the trails there are signed push-up paths from the car park will take you to the top, but it’s a serious workout, climbing over 300 vertical metres!  (Give yourself 45 - 60mins bottom to top). Hence recommend you use the uplift service.

Innerleithenn XC - Traquair (Red with black options)

  • This 19km MTB trail has a very technical and tough climb to the summit of Minch Moor and then some great singletrack descending.
  • There are optional, black-graded jumps and drop-offs. Some of the most noteworthy sections are the gnarly Stell Burn Climb, the very technical Mousetrap, the Lead Mine and Minch Moor Climbs and the Plora Craig and Caddon Bank, with its awesome downhill rollercoaster and downhill speediness.

The Golfie

  • The Golfie (officially Caberston Forest) is a playground myriad of natural off-piste trails.
  • These are non-waymarked and although historically unofficial the public event and race status for which they are now used has officially put them on the map. You need to buddy up to ride and or use a trail finding app.
  • They use a 1-5 difficulty rating after the trail name (1) is least technical, (5) is most technical. There are approximately two pro, 49 black, three red, two blue and four green downhill tracks. Some of the most popular below.
    • Flat White (3) - Black
    • Final Fling (2) - Black
    • 3G (4) and 3G EWS Exit (4) - Black
    • Repeat Offender (Top) (3) - Black
    • Community Service (3) - Black
    • NY, NY (2) - Black
    • Waterworld (5) - Proline
    • Opened July 2025 - Lower Wolves fast and flowy descent  - Caberston Forest

Final section of red xc  trail is just the greatest laugh/scary stuff/as close to flying on a xc bike it gets for me;  i am not up to full downhill or manic red route descent but this is a real joy and challenge for those red routers who like a bit of adrenalin rush I love this trail cos you go up knowing what fun you are going to have coming down, and it is just a simple up then down. The trail up may be bit steppy but can be avoided by doing fire road for most of the first half, and the second half up is more routine red trail; when you get to top the views are amazing in all directions, and worth parking the bike to walk off to left to loof down the valley Downhill is just great fun, the first 3 sections being full of fast flow and manageable jumps; after a bit of fire road the trail goes into `rock garden`, which is good reminder not to get too relaxed as there are few rocky surprises, and then onto the bank, which is scary at first as the drop offs are quite big and even the chicken runs to the left look awesome but then you just get carried away by the rollercoaster and final forest downhill sections that it is impossible not to end with a bloody great grin on your face and that wonderful sense of relief that your heading to the bar and not A&E

What do you like?

Fantastic downhill Good variety of trail Keeps it simple- you go up; then you come down So quiet compared to Glentress Great views from the top

Inners red route

Pulled into car park and at 8am it was already busy so we knew this place would be worth it! We geared up then started the climb. Damn was it technical but at the same time it was enjoyable. Alot of rocks and step ups. Couple of descents early on with big options on them and also easier lines for the less experienced. However my mate went of all the big options with me and he is a reletive newby to mtb.The climb up to minch moor seemed to go on and on, it was rocks nearly all the way and by the time we were at the top we felt exhausted. Lovely place to stop and rest though. Now the fun parts, the descent from minch  just seems to last forever and is so much fun. Very fast with the right amount of rocks, rollers, jumps and drops thrown in. After a couple of sections and you stop and look back up at minch moor it's hard to believe how you have come so far down so quickly! The small black loop that comes off was nice and technical. Alot of rocks. Worth doing definitely. My mate did the red option there and said that was brilliant as well. Then we get to caddon bank. It joins up here with the downhill trails. I was enjoying it as I want over the first 4 features, then the 3rd drop off.... bigger than the others. Didn't carry my speed, nosed in a bit and went flying off the bike down the trail! Alot of blood and later needed 9 stiches.I rolled some more of caddon bank until I then got a puncture! (We rode on friday 13th) So I walked the rest. Gutted as it looked awesome! My mate managed to ride it and was grinning ear to ear when I cought up with him. The git. Going to come back and finish the job

What do you like?

Epic trails, going both up and down Close to Innerleithen Big car park

What could be improved?

No on site facilities except a portaloo Needed 9 stiches after big crash caddon bank

*Yes*

Inners fun!

Great fun the trails are great fun for XC and downhill

What do you like?

A good few choices of downhill runs! The Red has some great downhill and some cool technical uphill to keep you entertained on the long cycle up to Minch moor The black add on to the red is a good laugh!

What could be improved?

Lack of facilities however there is a porta loo and the town isn't exactky far away! Nothing for beginners and the red is at the harder end of the scale

Would you recommend?

*Yes*

No crowds

What do you like?

Red route (Minch Moor) almost good as GT red but much quieter as people are scared away by the reputation of Inners and the total lack of facilities. Most of the downhill runs ARE fairly extreme, though "Make or Brake" is very fast but technically not too demanding, as is Cadon Bank after the first few drops. Also gives access to Southern Uplands way which gives fairly easy Xc riding but is very scenic.

What could be improved?

No facilities but the "town"? is less than a mile away for any thing you need including two bike shops.

Would you recommend?

*Yes*
