Drumtochty Forest Mountain Bike Trails

Drumtochty Forest Mountain Bike Trails are in Aberdeenshire, Scotland: a large network of natural, volunteer-built trails spanning blue through to pro-line, with no official waymarking. Most riding is on Strathfinella Hill and Black Hill, and there's access to gravel-friendly forest tracks too.

The Trails

• Most trails are on Strathfinella Hill and Black Hill, on the opposite side of the road from the North Drumtochty car park, easily reached from trailheads a hundred yards or so up the road, left or right as you exit.
• The terrain is loamy and fast-draining. Many individual trails are short but sit close together, so they link up well.
• Long-established local names include Sitka, Dundee Down (black), Keep Your Trout in Your Pants, Keyfinder, Stage 1 through Stage 4, Lockdown, Quarry Run and F and F (reds). These are community-known names, not signed or graded by any official body.
• Routes on the north side of Glen Drumtochty road also connect into Fetteresso Forest's mountain bike trails.
• There's a lot of other MTB nearby in Aberdeenshire, including Tarland Trails, Scolty Hill, Pitfichie and Aboyne.

Gravel Riding

There are forest access tracks through Drumtochty suitable for gravel bikes as well as mountain bikes, though there's no dedicated waymarked gravel route.

Local Organisation

• The Aberdeenshire Trail Association carries out ongoing trail maintenance at Drumtochty, including regular dig days: aberdeenshiretrail.org
• Drumtochty hosts a round of the Tartan Enduro Series, run by DoonThaBrae Events, each year.

Getting Here

Take the Glen Road on the north edge of Auchenblae. The car park is 2 miles along on the right. From Banchory, cross the Cairn O'Mount, and at the Clatterin Brig take a left, signposted. There are three car parks serving the forest; North Drumtochty, AB30 1TP, is the main and largest, with space for around 15 cars. There are no toilets on site, the nearest are in Auchenblae.
