Description

Cambusbarron Woods and North Third are two mountain bike areas that can be linked up to form one great day of riding. Located in Stirling the two areas together offer a neat mix of single track, mini downhill, dirt jumps, drops, and shore.

Cambusbarron Woods and Quarry

  • This part of the area has technical as well as flowing single-track with a multitude of line options to choose from. It descends into the quarry where you can go south to connect with North Third.
  • The descent has mini downhill options with shore, jumps, and drops.

Dirt Jumps

  • The quarry has a decent set of progressive dirt jumps.

North Third

  • The North Third riding area near Stirling offers a wide network of trails beyond the reservoir it’s named after. The terrain spans Lewis Hill with panoramic views, and the multi-use trail along Sauchie Craig’s ridge, a standout black-graded route. Below Sauchie Craig’s, steep, technical descents like Popeye and Achilles drop towards the water, tackling terrain that looks unridable at first glance. The area is divided by Windy Yet Glen and Middle Third Wood, with a mix of trails for all abilities:

    • Jump and freeride lines: Jump Line, Marley & Me

    • Steep and gnarly descents: Homicide, Homicide Central, Killers Secret, Killers Side Door

    •  Flow and technical singletrack: Wild Boar, Flojo, Timber, Veggie, Route 77, Candy Crush, Psilocybin

  • These trails can be looped in various ways, offering flexibility in both distance and descent, making N3 a rewarding and challenging spot for local and visiting riders alike.

  • The Volunteer trail community here is Ochil Trails.

Cambu & North Third

Still my favourite place to mtb

What do you like?

Cambusbarron(Gillies Hill) is a great place to mtb. Has something for everyone xc, dh, freeride & dj. Perfect for honing your skills, practicing techniques and sessioning jumps. Or you can do full runs of 2-3 mins each through a myriad of trails that criss cross and snake down the hill. There is also a great set of dirt jumps in the quarry that vary in size from small training jumps to jumps big enough to keep most riders entertained. North Third is more xc than anything with steep climbs and undulating downs.

What could be improved?

Nothing really, it's not a trail centre so there isn't any facilities except the car park at Quarry Road

Decent

Hand dug freeride lines and some decent sized jumps in the quarry (at least for Scotland). Plenty of stuff in the surrounding woods to keep you occupied and peer pressuring your mates into riding the bigger jumps is always a hoot. Be prepared for overgrown trails but the main lines are mostly okay trails could do with a bit of maintenance - I wish it weren't so far away or I'd be there myself. The main two quarry jump lines are both very rideable and fun and great for progressing skills and especially confidence. There is also some absolutely huge stuff currently unrideable as its overgrown - such as a big step down rock gap into an equally large step up. The North Third loop which is easily accessible from the Cambusbarron area is a great natural cross-country loop we some challenging sections - some steep ups and some very technical features. Definitely worth a ride.

What could be improved?

Just the fact they are looking a bit rugged at the moment, though we saw a good number of people up there digging and clearing so that's great.

Would you recommend?

*Yes*
