Bike Park Chilterns are working on a project to create a sanctioned mountain bike trail area within Whippendell Woods near Watford. This initiative aims to replace unauthorised trails that were removed to protect the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) while providing residents with access to high-quality mountain biking facilities.

The development of the trail area will be primarily funded through grants and is designed to benefit Watford Borough residents. This project aligns with broader community goals by promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing health inequalities. It offers improved off-road cycling opportunities for locals, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, through subsidised coaching and bike rental options.
The primary objective of this project is to provide "doorstep to trail" access for local residents, encouraging sustainable transportation and outdoor recreation.
The plans include:
Whippendell Woods is conveniently located to the west of Watford town centre, adjacent to Cassiobury Park. The site is easily accessible by bike from Watford and Croxley Green, and by car via junction 19 of the M25 and the A411 Hempstead Road3. Parking facilities are available at the Grove Mill Lane car park for those travelling by vehicle.
Watford Borough Council is set to allocate nearly £300,000 to support 20 community projects through its Neighbourhood Grant Scheme. One of the notable projects set to receive funding is the development of this mountain bike trail area in Whippendell Woods by Bike Park Chilterns. The council's Cabinet will review and recommend the projects for funding on November 25, 2024. Successful applicants will be notified after December 3, following the Cabinet's decision.
BikePark Chilterns is the same folk planning to tender for the lease for the iconic Aston Hill Bike Park to return it to being a fully operational bike park.
One to watch and we wish them luck.
