Badbury Clumps MTB Trails: Formal Agreement with National Trust in Progress

Over the past few months, local riders of Badbury Clumps in Oxfordshire have been in discussions with the National Trust to establish a formal agreement for the development and maintenance of the trails.  As a result, the National Trust is proposing a License to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the trails and streamline their management.

Why the License?

The National Trust aims to formalise the relationship between trail stewards and landowners, similar to their setup at another site in Cheshire. This agreement will help manage liability, ensure safety measures are in place, and support the ongoing maintenance of the trails.

What Does This Mean for Riders?

The good news is that there will be no cost to ride at Badbury Clumps. A newly formed organisation, Oxfordshire Trail Association (OX Trails), will hold the License and oversee trail development. To meet the requirements, OX Trails will secure public liability insurance, conduct risk assessments, and ensure safe working practices when maintaining the trails.

Changes Riders Will Notice

While the trails’ character will remain unchanged, you may see:

New signage to name trails, provide safety info, and alert walkers.

Improved vegetation control to keep trails clear during peak growth seasons.

Organised volunteer opportunities for both trail maintenance and vegetation management.

Getting Involved

Once the License is in place, volunteer events will be organised for those interested in digging or vegetation control—both critical to keeping the trails in top shape. However, rogue trail building will not be tolerated, as all new trails and features must be approved to ensure safety and sustainability.

What’s Next?

The License is still in draft form, and the official process is expected to take a few months. In the meantime, trail work will continue under National Trust volunteer agreements. For updates, riders can follow announcements on social media.

Protecting an MTB Gem

Badbury Clumps is one of Oxfordshire’s most valuable MTB spots, and these efforts aim to secure its future. If you ride at the Clumps, spread the word, get involved, and help ensure the trails stay open and running well for years to come!
