The UK Trails Project is set to publish a pioneering, comprehensive study of the UK trails network at the Scottish Mountain Bike Conference in November.

What is the UK Trails Project?

This project, supported by an initial 3 year project manager post (Dave Evans), has been created to support the mountain bike community, governing bodies, and land managers/owners to share knowledge, discuss issues and opportunities for greater collaboration, and improve the sustainability of the mountain bike trail network across the UK.

'The Trail Report' developed in partnership with Dr. Tom Campbell at Edinburgh Napier University will present the results of insight from over 30 key stakeholders, alongside the results from over 2000 survey responses. Its goal is to create a comprehensive understanding of the UK's trails and their effects on local communities and economies.

Why Is This Survey Important?

The upcoming survey is significant for several reasons:

  1. Broad Coverage: It will provide a nationwide overview of trails, from popular biking routes to lesser-known paths.
  2. Economic Data: The survey aims to highlight the economic benefits that trails bring to local areas, which can help in securing future funding.
  3. User Feedback: Gathering input from trail users will help managers understand their needs and improve trail experiences.
  4. Environmental Awareness: The data will also assist in balancing recreational use with conservation efforts.

How it will practically help

The Trail Report' will provide an evidence-based platform from which the UK Trail Project will launch ten work packages to provide practical assistance to the UK trails network, improving sustainability and creating a solid legacy for the next generation.
