Beicio Cymru has joined British Cycling and Scottish Cycling in a joint call for £30 million of UK Government investment in local cycling facilities across England, Scotland and Wales.

The proposal builds on evidence from the Places to Ride programme and sets out the potential to deliver around 250 new or upgraded community cycling facilities, focused on improving access to everyday places to ride.

According to the organisations, previous investment has already supported more than 500,000 people to become active through cycling and is linked to an estimated £13.1 million in NHS savings. The benefits cited include increased participation among children and young people, women and girls, disabled riders, and people from lower-income communities.

Uneven access remains a challenge

In its statement, Beicio Cymru notes that while Wales has seen clear benefits from investment in cycling facilities, access remains uneven, with many communities still lacking safe, local places to ride.

The joint call highlights the role of community-scale facilities such as pump tracks, BMX tracks and small trail hubs, which are often used year-round and act as entry points into wider cycling activity.

Call to action

Alongside the funding proposal, Beicio Cymru has published a letter template allowing supporters to write to their local MP in support of increased investment in community cycling facilities.
