Save Hill Top Trails: A Vital Part of Cumbria’s BMX Culture Is Under Threat

Hill Top Trails (HTT), has served as the backbone of the Cumbrian BMX scene for over two decades. Built and maintained by riders using only natural materials, the trails have evolved into one of the best dirt jump spots in the North of England— with the landowner’s blessing.

HTT isn’t just a set of jumps. It’s a space that’s shaped local BMX talent, supported a safe and inclusive riding environment, and fostered a unique trail-building ecosystem. The site has gone from an overgrown, fly-tipping hotspot to a vital community-managed woodland, where volunteers now clear debris, maintain paths, and support the wider local area during storms and winter weather.

Despite having received no complaints in 20 years and ongoing landowner support, HTT now faces possible removal. The issue? Its location—on the boundary of a National Park. A forthcoming planning meeting could determine its future, threatening to undo two decades of positive community work and strip riders of one of the region’s only free, progressive BMX spaces.

The local riding community has launched a petition urging the decision-makers to recognise the trails’ social, cultural, and environmental value.
