Robin Goomes has won Red Bull Rampage for the third year running, ahead of Hannah Bergemann and Kirsten Van Horne, at the event's original Utah site.
Robin Goomes (New Zealand) won the women's finals at Red Bull Rampage on Thursday 8 October, her third win in a row. Red Bull says she is the first rider in the event's history to win three titles in a row. The women's event has run three times, and she has won all three.
This year's Rampage marks the event's 25th anniversary, back at the original site near Virgin, Utah, where it began in 2001. For the first time, women and men dropped from the same start gate, on what Red Bull calls the tallest venue yet, with more than 200m of vertical descent across about 90 acres.
How the podium was decided
Each rider gets two runs, judges score each one, and the best single run counts. Goomes scored 93.50 on her second run, which included a flat spin 360, a backflip off a big step-down and a backflip cancan near the bottom. Red Bull says the flat spin 360 was a first in the women's field. She had trained the step-down backflip at a compound she built at home in New Zealand.
"Winning once was something I never thought I could accomplish, so winning this third title is a dream," Goomes said. "All I knew this year is that if I wanted to do it again, I'd have to push harder than I've ever done and be better than I have been previously."
Hannah Bergemann (USA) was second for the second year running, 0.75 points behind on 92.75. Her first run had a backflip near the top, a raw chute section, a big drop and a suicide no-hander at the finish, and her second, the one that counted, repeated the backflip and the no-hander. "Months and months, years of prep on the bike, getting everything ready, then building for ten days and practicing," she said. "By the time you get to comp day, you just want to do your thing."
Kirsten Van Horne (Canada) was third with 86.50 from a clean top-to-bottom first run through the steepest chutes and exposed ridgelines of the venue.
Scottish rider
Mikayla Parton, from Fort William, riding her first Rampage as a wildcard, finished seventh with 81.75 on her second run.
