The Forest of Dean trail center in Gloucestershire launches a new red extension to the Freeminers called Adit. It is 5.6 miles in length and like all the best things has taken hundreds of volunteer hours over the last two years (led by the local Dean Trail Volunteers group).

The new sections are named Pig Track, Bluebells Climb, Boars Nest, Biscuits Bits, Sugar Rush, Cashbox, Super-cross, Stick Witch, and the awesome TNT descent leading to Bear Trap. Each section has been a labour of love and offers a different flavour from the fast flowing to slow and technical. The new trail opened on the 24th of September 2022.
The Forest of Dean has lots on offer:
There is a decent cafe and facilities but most importantly it is full of great trails like the Verderers Blue, the Freeminer Red trail (now extended of course), a green family cycle trail, a skills area, a pump track, a kid-friendly skills loop and an all-ability downhill mountain bike trail designed for 4 wheels. There is also an Orange graded Sallowvallets Downhill area with 10+ runs and natural, enduro trails in the wider area.
For the anoraks amongst you:
Why Adit?
An adit (from Latin aditus, entrance) is an entrance to an underground mine that is horizontal or nearly horizontal, by which the mine can be entered, drained of water, ventilated, and minerals extracted at the lowest convenient level. Adits are also used to explore mineral veins.
