Squirrel Chaser Trail Overview

The new route combines existing riverside trails and forest roads with 2km (1.25 miles) of brand new singletrack called Oakey Cokey, named after the oak plantation it winds through. The trail features swooping descents, a challenging switchback climb, and progressive rocky features, giving riders a fun way to build skills in a stunning forest setting.

Built for Progression and Inclusion

Squirrel Chaser is not just for intermediate riders—it’s also suitable for those using some non-standard cycles, ensuring more people can access off-road riding. The trail follows Forestry England’s clear blue-grade waymarking, and a new printed trail map will be available from the visitor centre from 6 April.

Part of a Bigger Network

This trail expands Hamsterley’s impressive network of 64km of waymarked MTB trails, which already includes much-loved routes, The new addition opens up new areas of the forest and offers a perfect warm-up before tackling the harder red or black routes.

Funded and Supported Locally

The project received £100,000 from the Rural England Prosperity Fund, part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, alongside support from Forestry England. Community involvement played a big role in its development, with riders from Hamsterley Trailblazers, volunteers, and partners taking part in a taster day in February.

Voices from the Trail

Mark Holroyd, head of recreation at Forestry England North, said the trail “opens up new areas of Hamsterley Forest for riders… It’s the perfect time to get back to nature and explore Hamsterley on two or three wheels!”

Mark Stamper from Durham County Council added that the trail will help boost local tourism and promote healthier lifestyles for residents and visitors alike.

Alex Talks, chair of Hamsterley Trailblazers, praised the trail’s balance: “There are some lovely flow sections... challenging features for developing riders, and enough fun and speed for the more advanced. It’ll be very popular.”
