Machiatto trail at Pitfichie gets major revamp

Aberdeenshire Trail Association (ATA) has completed a significant rebuild of the Macchiato trail at Pitfichie, improving the ride experience while preserving the rugged technical character the trail is known for.

The rebuild was delivered by the ATA community, with a special mention going to Mark from Northline Trails, a former ATA committee member, for bringing his trail-building skills to the project. The work focused on delivering more flow without losing the committed line choice and natural terrain that has made Macchiato a favourite at the Aberdeenshire venue since ATA took on its stewardship in 2018. The project was supported by permission from the land manager, Forestry and Land Scotland, and donations from 20.twenty.store and the Scottish Enduro Series, and contributions from ATA's Trail Karma supporters.

About Pitfichie

Pitfichie sits on the B993 near Monymusk in Aberdeenshire and is managed in partnership between Forestry and Land Scotland and the ATA, which has been adopting and maintaining natural and downhill trails across the site since 2018. The network combines Forestry and Land Scotland's graded routes with ATA's adopted natural and downhill lines across open hilltops and wooded slopes.

  • Red-grade singletrack including the Granite Top Trail across open hilltops
  • Natural technical trails including White Lady, Devil's Staircase and Badger's Box
  • Downhill options including Phoenix Downhill and the orange-grade Pitfichie Downhill Trail
  • No on-site facilities — nearest cafes and shops are in Monymusk and Alford

The venue features in both the Aberdeenshire and Scottish Enduro Series and hosts regular ATA dig days throughout the season.
