Inclusive Trail Progress at Kielder – Next Phase Coming Soon

At the end of last year, Forestry England completed a major reworking of the Lone Star Trail at Kielder Mountain Bike Centre in Northumberland. The updates have made this 9.5km black-graded trail more inclusive, with improved suitability for Adaptive Mountain Bikes (AMTB).

The project was supported by funding from Northumberland County Council, the North of Tyne Combined Authority, and the UK Government. It’s part of a wider effort to make more of the Kielder trail network accessible to a broader range of riders.

Forestry England has confirmed that another phase of work on the trail is planned and will be announced this autumn. The trail has previously been reported to eventually be extended, with the top section of boardwalk and the Purdom Plunge descent expected to open later in 2025 — further enhancing the ride and experience from Kielder Skyspace down to the village. Haven't yet heard if this has launched so so this may be what the teaser refers to. Let us know if you know?

Background on Lone Star and the Wider Trail Network

Lone Star is named in celebration of the area’s renowned dark skies and ties into local landmarks like the Kielder Observatory and Kielder Skyspace. It starts from the Skyspace car park and finishes in Kielder village, with both views and features reflecting the natural and astronomical landscape.

It’s one of eight waymarked trails at Kielder MTB Centre, which span over 100 miles and range from family-friendly greens to technical reds and blacks. A dedicated MTB Trials Park (orange grade) and recent additions like the Mile Down and Northern Downhill Descent areas continue to broaden the offering for riders of all abilities.
