Highland Wildcat Trails, the volunteer-run mountain bike venue built into the slopes of Ben Bhraggie above Golspie in Sutherland, says its wooden flyover urgently needs replacing, and has secured most of the funding to do it.

According to Highland Wildcat Trails, the Kilbraur Windfarm Community Benefit Trust has pledged £15,800 towards rebuilding the flyover as an identical structure in new larch. The group says it still needs to secure the remaining £4,000, around 20 percent of the full £19,800 project cost, before work can begin. That cost includes flying all materials to the site by helicopter.
Highland Wildcat says the funding proposal, put together around six months ago, missed two further costs. One is a temporary bypass route to keep walkers and mountain bikers safe during the roughly four weeks of construction, for which the group is still awaiting a quote. The other is a secure metal storage box for tools up in the woods, which volunteers plan to have flown in during the same helicopter lift rather than carrying equipment up and down the hill during maintenance weekends.
To help fund those two extras, Highland Wildcat has launched a crowdfunder with a £1,000 target. The group says this would replace income lost when the trailhead parking machine was out of action for the whole of June, letting it cover the bypass and the tool box without drawing heavily on its reserves.
Donations can be made via PayPal, or by scanning the QR code at the car park. Like the rest of the venue, the project is being run entirely by volunteers.
No start date has been confirmed for the flyover works, so riders planning a visit once building gets underway should check Highland Wildcat's Facebook page for the latest on trail access.
