British Cycling announces major changes to how new and grassroots riders enter competition

British Cycling has outlined a new five level competition pathway designed to make it easier for riders to enter the sport and find events that match their experience. The framework aims to bring consistency across all disciplines by 2029, backed by feedback showing that only one in five current events cater for newcomers.

At the base of the structure sit two new entry levels. Discover offers coach supported, confidence building sessions for first time competitors. Engage covers grassroots club and community activity, focused on simple formats and welcoming environments.

Above these, the pathway continues through Challenge (regular competition for developing riders), Advance (higher level racing for experienced competitors) and Elite (the top tier of domestic performance). British Cycling says the unified system will make event listings clearer, support organisers and link into upcoming digital improvements.

  • Discover – Safe, welcoming introduction for newcomers with coach support.
  • Engage – Grassroots, club and local events focused on fun and community.
  • Challenge – Regular competition with discipline specific progression.
  • Advance – Higher standard events for experienced competitors.
  • Elite – The top level of domestic competition.

British Cycling will work with riders, clubs and organisers over the next 14 months to refine the detail and deliver the rollout.
