Good feeling of the lakes big hills big views

just get out and ride

What do you like?

local loop for me so go there quite a bit, most trails well kept and always developing, new section on south loop "a dog called sue" which cuts out a bit of fire road climbing but think the top south could do with a with a bit of love ( I went otb when my front wheel stopped dead and I didn't ) Don't dismiss the blue as a beginners trail this for me has the best bit of flowing trail in the whole forest

What could be improved?

Car parking is expensive but trails are free and money goes to development I pay 40 a year for a discovery pass which let's me park any time for as long as I want Still see people riding without a helmet on a folding commuter bike. The slog climb up the north red is still hard work

What do you like?

Great facilities, Cyclewise are good. Decent amount of singletrack.

What could be improved?

Trails lack flow compared to the Scottish centres, desperately needs more development.

Local gem

What do you like?

Great variety of trails, and when you get to know the fire road sections you, if you are short of time you can really mix and match your favourite parts of the trails! The blue is great for skill development - the first trail I ever rode! It is also still great fun as an experienced rider when ridden at speed. South loop is easier than the North red loop, so if trying red for the first time I'd recommend doing South first. There is now only one fire road climb on the North loop, that takes less than ten minutes. The rest of the trail is a mix of slate, roots and mud. Technical areas appear amongst swoopy areas to keep you on your toes. It just ticks every box. The South loop has a new start section so you are only following fire road for two minutes - look out for the new sign taking you off to the right before it directs you left onto some new singletrack littered with technical features that connects you up to the beginning of the original singletrack climb. That trail was built by volunteers using the funds from the car parking!

What could be improved?

None .

If time is short, do the bottom half of each section only.

What do you like?

Bottom half of both North and South loops are great, fast flowing, berms jumps the lot.

What could be improved?

Top half of both North and South loops are a bit tedious, slow bumpy and twisty. On the North loop esp after a very long climb you keep thinking "where's the downhill start?". Parking expensive at the visitors centre as usual.

Would you recommend?

*Yes*

Great North loop, south left me questioning!

Quercus could do with its own start point. Not sure about the south loop length but overall a good laugh and the descents make it all worthwhile. I would definitely go back when I'm next in the Lakes.

What do you like?

North loop was excellent, got there at half 7 to get an early loop in and wasn't disappointed, a bit more technical climbing would have been nice, fireroads can get a little tedious, but the views made up for it. The trail conditions were great, well kept and thought out, the final descent was fabulous, absolutely loved it.

What could be improved?

South loop seemed a little slow to get going, didn't seem to flow quite like the North loop did, when it did get going however it was great, plenty of features and varying surfaces, again the descents were great but found myself at the end of the trail a couple of miles short of the advertised length? Not sure if I missed a sign although I'm sure I didn't, and my GPS map matches the trail map. Also the Quercus trail looked promising for my girlfriend who had never been mountain biking before but after starting in the same place as the Altura she was left in tears before the first section was done. Far too technical straight away, however after the fireroad crossing it was 10x easier (not that we got that far together, she was totally put off)

Altura trail (North & South)

What do you like?

superb trail had me grinning from ear to ear. A tough slog uphill for 2 or 3 miles but soon over with a mix of interesting switchback uphill single track with a bit of an uphill fire road slog on I think the North loop. However, the pay off is epic, with down hill swooping single track pretty much all the way down with a few jumps and rooty drop offs along the way. The views are some of the best I have had the privellage to ride in and the trail allows a great rest stop in the middle so you can recharge your batteries bedfore flying around the other loop. I love this trail and for me the best trail in England!

What could be improved?

bit of a fire road slog on (I think) the North loop uphill - this could change to be a bit more interesting

Would you recommend?

*Yes*
