🥇 Trail of the Year – Winner Announced!

Trail Builder N°3 Tilgate:

Tons of potential for fun.

I've been involved in some work here with the main ppl. Worked together on a project for well over a year making one of my absolute favorate tracks here, Pulling Teeth, uncovered some Pirate Treasure and helped tinker a little on other stuff.

Huge shout out to N°2 and N°1 Trail Builders for there continuous work and effort keeping things running, and to the other random who put in some jumps and quietly maintain stuff, you know who you are. 🫶

Tilgate used to be sanctioned C. 2011 it apparently stopped being "official, but from my conversations with locals I ride with its been ridden for decades. The trails are short but sweet, good verity, from tight single track in the trees, to Flow-Tech lines, natural trails and even some more serious steep stuff for advanced riders, Tilgate has a lot to offer do long as your happy getting it from 5 min of climbing and 2min descending. You can come here with your kids to learn some skils, or with your mates and session the trails for a few hours.

Loads of access points, but no parking unless you park by K2 area.

It would be amazing to get this place some recognition, official status for people who do good safe work on the trails and maybe even some financial support for signage at trail heads and a map wit grading.

Sadly one of the local forest volunteers turned out to be a trail sabotaging menace a few years back, but a real dialogue with the ranger would be very welcome.

What do you like?

Can always mix it up and everything is close on the hill, so you can travel from one end to the other in about 15 min max.

Locals are always chipper and welcoming, happy to show people around etc.

Good for family's, and more serious riders.

What could be improved?

The local authority in charge of maintenance of the fire roads have allowed them to fall into disrepair, dangerously deep rain ruts eroded which poses a risk for walkers, commuters, wildlife and horse riders. There is prevelent mud in the winter, stuff I've worked on mostly drains well and works with nature, but some stuff is un-rideable in the winter and/or gets damaged by traffic, and some fire road has been difficult or impossible to pass due to mud even until last month.

Financial input, for sanctioned planned work and Trails would reduce this issue.

Not enough people put the work in, but ride a lot in all conditions, so again, official Trail Association with some reasonable amnesty for past work, would allow the real ones and some well selected locals to really make it amazing again here.

Tilgate Forest Trails. Excellent for all riders.

great set of trails. Maintained by locals with care..  Trails are short but you can join new ones quickly and there is somethign for everyone.   It's easy to spend a full day exploring and each time you go backm, you'll find somethign new to enjoy.

Most trails are rollable however the more skilled riders will be able to get more out of the trails.

Tilgate

I love this place, this is where my MTB addiction started. Tilgate isn't big but is big enough to spend there whole day and have a lot of fun. We have been digging in the woods for a couple of years and with the time we have learned what we can do and what not to build, so in last 2 years nothing has been flated by the forestry.

What do you like?

A lot of trails with difrent levels for everyone, everything is rolleable and in reasonable size but you can send really big

What could be improved?

Some jumps are made by the kids who got no experience at all and doesn't look so good plus they are made in places that my attract attention of the people who doesn't support mtb. Also lot pf people don't take the rubbish back with them. And the worst are surron riders who are damaging trails.

Down the local.

This is my local, it's not perfect, but we love it.

There is a dedicated few of us that are looking after things as best we can and making little improvements here and there, especially drainage, making sure the flora and forna is not harmed and trying to make things legit.

There is a good variety of short but sweet runs that have some fun features and create a good laugh and smile, they can all be linked, looped and you can make a real day of it riding and sessioning trails.

I know I'm going to be biased but personal favorites are Pulling Teeth, Boggy Log, Pirate's Treasure and whatever we name the new one. Notable mentions are Mr.Bradley right over the fire road and into the berm bit, Psycho is awesome, especially the step down into the berm.

Cheeky Chappy needs work after some kids messed with it, and there are loads of other random bits that need love, revisiting and linking.

What do you like?

A few of us lads are very dedicated to looking after the place, made multiple additions and improvements. We are looking to make things official. But desperately need help and guidance on how and what to do.

Locals are always friendly and willing to show people where things are.

We are a no peer pressure kind of vibe, do what you feel safe doing, no shame in that.

There are over 400 people on the main page, Tilgate Forest MTB, and the core riders mostly know each other, we often get new people move to the area who ride and we always enjoy meeting randoms and making new friends.

Most walkers are friendly.

What could be improved?

We are not currently sanctioned but are tolerated as Tilgate used to be a bike park, provided we don't go mad or build wooden features.

Quite a lot of random kids come and build badly thought out and executed features on trails that are already being cared for by people, basically poaching, and this often has to be broken down, repaired etc. And when caught we politely but firmly educate them not to.

Although there a good number of us we don't always work together and it's hard to organise well enough to cover everything that needs tlc.

We have a trail care that has sabotaged, and vandalised trails, a witness found her mid trail breaking up a berm, she is a forestry volunteer.

Last year the forestry were in, they mostly left trails alone, however they did lots of damage to the fire roads, the whole wood is part of a NCN route that is now way less accessible due to severe ruts, puddles and erosion.

Not really anywhere to park, we definately urge people to avoid the lane to the south as it creates friction with the locals, if you must park, use the Tilgate parking north of the M23.
