Lots a superb routes with great variety and brilliant scenery
What do you like?
Artificial trails are imitations of mountains - this is the real thing.
Superb views that add to the experience
Open 365/24/7
Free at point of access
Loads of variety
Routes as long or short as you want to make them
A lot of cheeky trails in addition
Often you seem to have the whole area to yourself
What could be improved?
Must carry gear in case of breakdown/weather/injury in remote locations
Unless you seek advice there are some lousy routes as well as good ones so you could be unlucky - ask/research first and you'll be OK
Avoid honeypot (Windermere, Ambleside, etc.) in summer holidays - traffic on roads and bridleways
Predicting timing can be difficult because of the variety of terrain and other factors
