Local playground

For a community trail its well built and maintained by Scott and his gang. Its on a number of local loops for me and its nice to have some local trail where mountain bikers actually have right of way! Great for adding a bit of blast to a Rivi ride or doing a quick hour sessioning a couple of laps or runs. I've seen some of debate on here about the jumps etc. at the bottom of the red / black. There are a bit densely packed but i wouldn't describe them as dangerous. The contractors made an awful job of that section in the first stage of build and whats there now is a vast improvement. The bottom of a black is more a playground then a single trail. There's a variety of lines so something for most tastes and worth experimenting rather than just riding through once. If the new option gets to go ahead hopefully it will have a more spaced out feel to add something again different into the small space. The climb can get a bit gooey in the winter but to be fair there are not any xc riders who show up to dig. Its a shame plans for similar mini centres in the area didn't get to go ahead due to budget constraints as i think the Nab can largely be viewed as a success story. Don't show up expecting llandegla and you wont be disappointed!

What do you like?

All weather, local priority trail for bikes. Great for adding to a loop to an xc ride or a quick hour's session doing xc laps or dh push ups.

What could be improved?

Dont bother travelling miles unless you are doing a longer ride in the area (or know what your getting). If it don't know your way round parking, finding it and the actual trails themselves might all be a bit confusing!

Little Gem

Well with a ride!

What do you like?

This is my local trail so I will be biased.... but given its mainly volunteer built and maintained its a cracking little place to have some fun on your bike, although short it can be done several times with different life choices as options (red and black) and various other natural routes in and around the forest, plus its not too far from Rivington so great to link up for a longer ride!

What could be improved?

It can get quite boggy and wet in places after heavy rain but this can only to be expected given its volunteer maintenance for which they do a cracking job!

It is not a trail centre but links well with many miles of quality off road riding. Good to include in a ride but if you only want to do one lap you will probably be disappointed. Great for multi lap training. You do need to spend time to get to know the trails. A couple of signposts would help. Thrash yourself hard for a few continuous laps to get the best out of it.

What do you like?

Can be ridden in all seasons. Multiple laps develop skills Lots of trail riding in the area Good for bike/suspension setup

What could be improved?

2 trees I'd like to cut down!

*Yes*

Good for a quick blast

Ok lets get the obvious out of the way, this isn't a "Trail Centre". So don't go here expecting it to be Llandegla with miles of trails and a nice burger at the end. Having said that, what it is is a great training ground for local riders. It can teach riders how to tackle switchbacks, berms, rock gardens, small drops, north shore and jumps all in a small area. Treat the place as a spot to session different runs to the bottom trying out all the different lines with a push-up back to the top.

What do you like?

Great twisty red descent and black descent with multiple routes. Good for a quick local blast. Possible to link in with other trails in the area for a longer ride (White Coppice, Great Hill, Rivington) Lots of different trail features in a small space.

What could be improved?

Not much parking available. The trail can be confusing for newcomers.

Disappointed

I visited this trail yesterday but was really disappointed with what i found. Both red and black routes seem to have been spoiled by amateur attempts to create jumps etc. The red route starts off well with what appears to be the original professional built trail with good flow and well established rock features but deteriorates lower down into what i can only describe as a safety concern.
The bottom of the Red opens out into, according to the trail head map, a bridleway, someone (i presume local kids) have built a jump at the side of the slope to the right, with trees in the middle of the landing, get this wrong and you are in trouble, that's if you don't hit a member of the public walking/riding a horse on the bridleway as you need to gain speed for this section due to the badly placed jump.
You then hit a succession of 3 closely placed jumps after the opening which are all too close together to actually jump properly so you need to pick which one you want to jump, I'm not sure who has attempted to build these but they need some training in trail building/safety.
The lower section of red is good and again appears original which brings me onto the black.

I have ridden black sections up and down the country and raced downhill in my younger years but the black at healey nab seems again a amateur hashed attempt to cram as many features as possible into the small area.
I'm not sure if there is a dedicated group maintaining the trail with experience but i doubt it as it seems to have been ruined.

In summary i would advise the council to employ a professional trail building company such as Trailcraft who have done a fantastic job over at the nearby Bickerstaffe cycle track, they could then improve what has got great potential as a Mini trail centre rather than the poor attempt it currently is.

A good trail if you are in the area

Certainly not worth a special journey, but if you find yourself riding in the area (Rivington etc ) as I was then its well worth a detour. For volunteer maintained trails its a good little run though at only a few K's long don't expect a great deal. As I've said I used it to break up a much longer XC ride in the area and it did that perfectly though I think If I'd made a specific journey to ride just these trails I'd have been very disappointed. That saying there is some awesome natural riding round the area and by using the good facilities at Rivington and combine Healy Nab with the natural stuff an epic eduro day can be had.

What do you like?

Good little XC trail

What could be improved?

No facilities and hard to get to by road i.e. impossible

Would you recommend?

*Yes*
