Gisburn Forest MTB bike trails are in the Forest of Bowland, near Clitheroe, in Lancashire. There are also Downhill tracks like the Orange graded Hope Line as well as specific DH Lines in the area.

There is an active volunteer community at Gisburn who are continually further developing and nurturing what's on offer.

There is a vast network of natural trails in the Yorkshire Dales just over the county border.

The 8 (Red with Black Options)

  • The red (with back sections) is an 18-kilometre trail, set overlooking the Stock Reservoir in a scenic forest setting. Designed in a figure of eight (hence the name) it consists of diverse downhill and shore sections. The trail is for experienced and intermediate riders. Some of the famous sections are Bottoms Beck, Home Baked Park Wood, the roller coaster of Hully Gully, Bigfoot slab and Swoopy and Rocky Road.
  • Long Way Down is a red descent as an alternative to the black Hully Gully. As well as offering choice it should help with winter erosion of the gulkey.

Bottoms Beck (Blue)

  • The blue trail is a shorter 9.5-kilometre route specifically for families and beginners. It has sections of green.

Hope Line Down (Orange)

  • This is a great little downhill trail that starts off with some rollers, kickers are full of fun berms, tabletops drops and then more of the same before ending on a pump track style finale

Skills loop

  • The skills loop is situated by the stone wall circle Gisburn Forest Hub. It comprises three interconnected mini loops, each progressively more challenging riding experiences. The trails are filled features and obstacles designed to test riders' abilities.

Advanced Skills Area (Replacing Leap of Faith)

  • Progressive set-up featuring tabletops, a new jump line, berms, and rollers

Other Trails

  • There is an off-piste network, with well-known wild trails including Stickman, LoaMUDageddon, Old School Yorkie, Search for Yann’s Burger, Chunk Norris, and Uncle Bulgaria.

  • Gisburn Forest Trail Builders, a group of enthusiastic riders from throughout the region has helped on a number of volunteer trail building days organised by the Forestry Commission. The group has contributed an estimated £100,000 of value to the project by hand-building over 1,500 metres of new trail and over 1100 volunteer hours (last year alone). The hand-built sections of the trail are very different in character to the machine built areas.
  • PMBA are an organisation dedicated to taking biking forward across the whole Pennines. They are a group of riders, clubs and volunteer trail building teams from across Lancashire and the North Pennines.

Other Stuff

  • If you are looking for a guide or coach in the region then check out Adam at Trail Explorer who works throughout the North West including lee Quarry and Gisburn Forest
  • The trails are part of the Ribble Valley Sports and Physical Activity Alliance (SPAA) and were made possible by a £60,000 lottery grant from Sports England. £60,000 was also contributed by the Forest of Bowland AONB, Ribble Valley Borough Council, Ribble Valley Strategic Partnership, United Utilities, and the Forestry Commission
  • In 2016 Gisburn took 3rd place in the Trail of the Year campaign for England. In 2015 they took 2nd position for the iBikeride English Trail of the Year awards. In 2014 they were awarded 1st place in 2014 for the iBikeRide English Trail of the Year and in 2013 were crowned UK Trail of the Year, taking pole position.

Always fun

If you’re willing to put the work in you will definitely be rewarded with a good days riding, Its more about technical riding than long flowy descents. As the trails are rocky and rooty with boulders and north shore, short sharp climbs and steep descents it gets you thinking all the time where you can’t afford to switch off, when you do reach a flowy descent its worth all the effort took to rich it, With Hully Gully being worth the visit on its own with its large berms and short steep sections.  There is a reworked blue section that is a bit different from the rest of the trails where it has been smoothed off and a bit tame compared to the rest of the trails but it works well and comes as a welcome break from the jarring rocks & slippery roots giving you the opportunity to get some hard pedal strokes in and up the pace.  Also just opened is the new trail hub café which provides the usual in a cool chilled environment good for hanging out after your ride. It’s a tough 20k figure of 8 ride but it all ways leaves you feeling like you’ve done a good days riding and once refuelled you can go and play on the Hope line and the downhill run.

What do you like?

The trails & new cafe

What could be improved?

You've got to work hard to get the best out of the trails.

Best riding this country has got on offer!

Fantastic variety of terrain, from big boulders through rocky rolls, flowy gully, gap jumps (on the black section), Hope - the most smiley down and most of all - some of the finest and longest stretches of tight turns through thick forest over rocky and rooty ground, where you wish you have cut your bars... Away from all the roads, passing streams, reservoir with a good deal of very doable woodwork. Nature-wise - the closest you can get to North Shore. Superb in bad weather as most of the trail is in deep deeep forest!

What do you like?

Great variety of terrain, both ups and downs keep you off your seat, sheltered from the wind and the element, excellent rocky sections...

What could be improved?

No cafe

Very good trails

Very good DH trails and good facilities however trails could do with being fixed more often .

What do you like?

The main trail is very challenging and fun. The hope line is very smooth and good fun with drops, berms and jumps. The DH track is very big and full of small to big drops and gaps for beginners to advanced riders. The skills loop is a good warm up or a good track to improve on skills. Every track is always getting upgraded and being fixed. There is a cafe nearby and small food trailer in the occasionally car park (there are also toilets next to the car park).

What could be improved?

There are a few parts of the trails that could do with alot of work. DH and hope line are quite rough with loose rocks so perhaps could be a bit smoother and more pleasant to ride.

Gisburn 8

If your wanting a great day out then you must put Gisburn on your list. You won't regret it.

What do you like?

It's got the lot, Blue/Red/Black/Orange something for everyone. The new car park and toilets at the hub are spot on, also the skills area is a bonus to hone your talents on, i can't credit the trail builders enough for the tremendous work they have put in. Personally speaking the 8 is just sublime ( with Hully Gully thrown in)

What could be improved?

It's not really a bad point but Cafe would be better if could get a full breaky if an early bird, the bad point is the usual idiot walking dogs on the trail, twice now i've had disputes with walkers being on the tracks.

Would you recommend?

*Yes*
